Land acquisition act to benefit CG farmers: Charandas

Raipur, September 07, 2013

AICC spokesperson and Chhattisgarh Congress secretary incharge Bhakta Charandas on Saturday said Centre’s land acquisition act will benefit farmers and poor as it contains several provisions in favour of land owners. Notably, the parliament has recently passed land acquisition bill.

While talking to scribes at Congress Bhawan, he said by renaming the bill as Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bill, 2012 the union government ensured to cover all the aspects which were left in the old act.

“Earlier, there was no provision of compensation, rehabilitation and resettlement of farm land owners. Rather, the old law had provision of forced acquisition of lands. There was no safeguard for land owners. They were bound to accept low rate of their lands. The latest example is Naya Raipur where farmers were compelled to sell their lands at low rate,” he said.

“The situation will change with act coming into effect in next couple of months. The compensation will two times of the market rate in urban areas and four times in rural pockets. The farmers who sold their lands in last five years will be also eligible to receive compensation under the new act,” he said.

He said the Chhattisgarh government too should implement the act quickly and start compensating those whose lands were acquired forcibly.

‘Modi believes in hyperbolising’

When asked his take over Gujarat CM Narendra Modi, Charandas said the former believed in hyperbolising and hence his statements should be ignored. “Modi is the man who claims to have airlifted over 15000 people from flood-affected Uttarakhand. I am a poor man from Kalahandi, what can I say about this man,” he said.

Asked about his talks with potential poll candidates of Bastar region, he said it was positive discussion and names would be finalised after evolving consensus. He claimed that the party could win at least ten assembly seats in Bastar region.
