Terming saree, umbrella, bag, sweet and calendar distribution by PWD minister Brijmohan Agrawal to females during mahila uththan (women upliftment) programme in his Raipur South assembly constituency an attempt to affect them ahead of Vidhan Sabha polls, the Congress on Saturday said it would complain about it to the election commission.
“With less than two months remaining for polls, code of conduct will be implemented in next couple of days. In this scenario, if any state minister distributes sarees and other items gratis to voters, it would be considered as a deliberate attempt to influence them. The Supreme Court too says - even if there is ample time for polls, the act of party publicity through free distribution of commodities to voters comes under category of affecting voters by benefiting them. Hence, the Congress will take up this matter to the election commission,” said PCC spokesperson Sushil Anand Shukla.
He said it was an irony that the minister thought about women upliftment so late when crime against females had increased by manifolds in state.
“In last 15 days, two women were gangraped in their houses. The incidents occurred in the minister’s assembly constituency. Besides, innocent minors were raped in government’s ashram schools and several females are missing from state but the government is hibernating,” he added.
