Mahant attends international seminar on FMD control

Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Processing Industries Charandas Mahant on Monday attended the inaugural session of three-day International Conference on Scientific Developments and Technical Challenges in the Progressive Control of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) at New Delhi.
In the conference, the experts informed that animal husbandry, dairy development and fisheries sectors play an important role in the national economy as well as in the socio-economic development of the country. It is predicted that livestock will contribute, more than half of the total agricultural income, in the next two decades, besides providing cheap nutritional food, to million of people, they said.
The livestock provides not only essential proteins and nutritious human diet through milk, eggs, meat etc, but also plays an important role in utilisation of non-edible agricultural by-products, and utilisation of raw materials, such as hides and skins, blood, bone, fat etc, they added.
According to estimates of the Central Statistical office, the value of output from livestock and fisheries sectors together at current prices was about Rs 408386 crore during 2009-10. It was Rs 340473 core for livestock sector and Rs 67913 crore for fisheries.
The conference is jointly being organised by Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR) – the apex body in the country responsible of agricultural research, education and extension, DADF and Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).
The conference is being attended by over 600 representatives from across the world along with senior officials of ICAR, FAO, vice chancellors of several agricultural universities of India, directors of Animal Husbandry Department of the state governments, representatives of industry and veterinary professionals, etc.
The inaugural session of the conference was also attended by Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Processing Industries Harish Rawat, Secretary Union Animal Husbandry, Dairy and Fisheries Department Rudhra Gangadharan, Secretary, DARE and Director Genera ICAR Dr S Ayyappan and Dr Juan Lubrot chief veterinary officer FAO.
