Congress has alleged that the state government was
insensitive towards Aanganbadi workers and assistants and hence not fulfilling
their demands. “In favour of their 12-point demand, large number of Aanganbadi
workers and assistants staged statewide dharna in the capital city on February
24 but the government remained unmoved,’ said PCC vice president Pushpa Devi
Singh, general secretary Fulodevi Netam and PMC president Ambika Markam on
Saturday.
“The responsibility of the Aanganbadi workers and
assistants is to take care of the health of pregnant women and infants by
providing them nutritious food but the government’s adamant attitude forced
them to stay away from their work for one day and engage in dharna,” they said.
They said the demands including hike in stipend by
Aanganbadi workers and assistants was genuine and the government should accept
them immediately. “Their stipend is actually incurred by the Centre. In April
2011, the Centre had hiked the stipend of the Aanganbadi workers from Rs 1500
to Rs 3000 and assistants from Rs 750 to Rs 1500. But due to government’s
apathy, the hiked stipend came into effect from January 2012. Moreover, the
state government is also deceiving people by claiming the Central fund for
stipend as its own,” they added.
Notably, there are 87526 Aanganbadi workers and 6548
assistants in 43763 Aanganbadi centres across the state. The Congress leader
said that considering the role played by Aanganbadi workers and assistants in maintaining
good health and nutrition of pregnant women and kids in rural pockets the
government should show generosity towards them.
