The Congress on Wednesday said that the government’s ambitious metro rail project from Raipur to Rajnandgaon would never come into practical footing as Chief Minister Raman Singh’s announcement regarding it was mere deception and purported to win back trust of the people who no more believe on BJP. “The government is not at all serious on metro rail project. Instead, it is eyeing to get cheap publicity through this hyped project,” said PCC spokesperson Sushil Anand Shukla.
“The BJP had promised to commence metro rail from Raipur to Durg in its poll mandate during 2008 Assembly elections, but it has not taken any step in this direction by far. Ironically, it is now making similar promise,” he said.
“According to norms, the Centre nods for metro rail project to only those cities where population is at least 20 lakh. Individually, Raipur, Durg and Rajnandgaon do not have this much population. Now, to get Central approval for the project, the government would have to notify the three cities as one unit that should be governed by one municipal corporation,” he said.
Shukla claimed that the ruling party had lost its mandate in urban areas including Raipur, Bhilai, Rajnandgaon and Bilaspur and hence it wanted to betray the people of these places. “The Congress has won municipal elections in all these four cities. In Durg, the party gave tough fight to BJP. The ruling party is apprehensive about its defeat in Congress-ruled cities and hence has stopped providing funds for developmental works in such places. The BJP is actually playing poll planks like metro rail projects to increase its vote bank again,” he said.
