Power crisis may worsen in summer: Congress

Raipur, February 21, 2012

Congress has warned that power crisis in the state may worsen in summer due to mismanagement of the government. “It is not even summer but the rural pockets are witnessing frequent power cuts everyday. The power companies are running short of adequate electricity at present and the gap between demand and supply will certainly increase further in summer. The government has not made any concrete plan to cope with this situation and eventually, the consumers would have to suffer,” said PCC’s chief spokesperson Shailesh Nitin Trivedi on Tuesday.
“The ruling BJP is projecting the state as power hub of the country, but the people know the stark reality. Presently, the state consumes 2282 MW electricity while in summer the demand will rise to 3500-4000 MW. The power companies are running short of 500 MW electricity at present while the deficiency will go up to 1500 MW in summer,” informed Trivedi.
“The government had earlier claimed to start power production in its Madva and Korba West plants from December 2011, but both the units are still under-construction,” he said.
“The power surplus state is compelled to buy electricity from other states owing to corruption prevailed in the power companies. Now, the government wants to burden the consumers with high power tariff, a ploy to compensate the inordinate expenditure done by the power companies,” he charged.
“Surprisingly, since inception, the spending of production and distribution companies rose to 15% and 83% respectively while that of transmission company surged to 222%, an apparent indicator of corruption prevailed in the system,” he said.
“The proposed 30% power tariff hike would deeply dent pockets of common people, especially farmers,” he added.
