The police on Friday lathicharged large number of Congress workers who had blocked the road traffic near Rajendra Nagar turning at Ring Road No 1 with their demand of under-bridge construction and provision of traffic signal at the spot to check mishaps. The police also arrested 65 Congress workers, but released them later in the evening.
The Congress workers said the Rajendra Nagar turning had become accidental prone zone as more than 16 persons died in last four months at that spot. “The local administration, the government and the construction agency of the fourlane project are not only apathetic towards public inconvenience, but also have become insensitive,” they said.
The agitating Congress workers got support of the local residents who too joined them in disrupting road traffic. The police rushed to the spot when it heard about the traffic jam and started lathicharging Congress workers.
Soon, senior Congress leader Satyanarayan Sharma reached the spot and expressed his ire to the top cops over police action against his partymen. He said the police had no right to brutally attack the Congress workers. He said the demonstration was result of government’s apathy.
Sharma also talked to Union Road Transport Minister CP Joshi over phone and informed him about the incident. Then he talked to officials of NHAI regarding construction of under-bridge and provision of traffic signal at Rajendra Nagar turning. The NHAI officials sought one week time to obtain permission from the Centre regarding such provisions.
The Congmen who were agitating at the spot were DCC Raipur Urban president Inderchand Dhariwal, Pankaj Sharma, Santosh Agrawal, corporators Pramod Dubey, Sahdev Vyavhaar, Jagdish Ahuja, Babul Yadav, Afroz Anjum, Sundar Jogi, Mohammad Anwar, Jasbeer Dhillon, Rakesh Dhotre, Pappu Banjare, etc.
