The Congress on Tuesday alleged that the government had postponed its ambitious nagar swaraj programme twice because it was scared of facing public ire. “The government’s gram swaraj programme was a complete failure. People realised that it was merely praising itself and doing nothing for them. Their grievances also remained unsolved. Hence, they were eagerly waiting for ministers and officials to come to their areas during nagar swaraj programme,” said PCC spokesperson Mahendra Chhabda.
“The government had received 516784 applications before the commencement of its gram swaraj programme. This proves that the ministers and officials are indifferent towards the problems of the people. Expressing their annoyance, some villagers have even taken hostage of some officials during gram swaraj programme but the police arrested them on false charges. The villagers resorted to such act because they were frustrated and wanted to hold the government’s attention towards their miseries. In nagar swaraj too, the government would have faced similar embarrassing moments due to negligent attitude of its officials,’ Chhabda said.
“Through nagar swaraj, the government was once again planning to make false claims about the progress and development of the state but the people were waiting to take accounts of its eight years of regime. However, the government realised that public mood and decided to postpone its nagar swaraj programme again,” Chhabda said.
Notably, the government was supposed to organise nagar swaraj in 3084 wards of the state including 513 wards of ten municipal corporations, 681wards of 32 municipal councils and 1890 wards of 126 nagar panchayats. Earlier, the government had announced to organise nagar swaraj from December 18-25, 2011 but for some reason it postponed it and declared new date from January 18-22 2012. According to new schedule, the government had also received about 82000 applications from the people regarding their problem.
