Cong submits memo to Guv on farmers’ woes, human trafficking

Raipur, January 09, 2012

Expressing its concern over rising cases of farmers’ suicide and human trafficking, a delegation of Congress leaders led by PCC president Nandkumar Patel submitted a memorandum to Governor Shekhar Dutt on Monday. The party alleged that the government’s insensitivity had resulted in worsening of farmers’ condition and smuggling of tribal girls.
“The farmers are facing acute financial crisis and hence they are unable to pay their debts. With less or no crop production, they have no other option left than to commit suicide. Many of them have even switched their profession terming agriculture as unprofitable business,” said the Congmen.
They also exemplified the figures of National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) which said that about 12405 people committed suicide in 2009-10. “Over 75 percent of the state population depends on agriculture. Hence, the proportion of farmers committing suicide every year could easily be comprehended from the NCRB figures,” they added.
They said the government had also held paddy bonus of the farmers amounting Rs 2287 crore for the past couple of years. “If it will release the bonus amount, the farmers will be able to clear their loans. Besides, their financial problems will also be solved to a large extent,” they said.
They further alleged that mismanagement and irregularity prevailed in paddy procurement process. Demanding extension of procurement date till February 28, 2012 the Congress leaders said the government should also increase permissible moisture content of paddy up to 25 percent.
On human trafficking they said, “In 2008, about 3200 girls became victim of human traffickers. These girls belonged to Jashpur, Sarguja and other remote forest villages of the state. In 2011, number of tribal girls being smuggled shot up to 8000.”
They also informed the Governor about Chhattisgarh kids begging in other states including Bangalore.
The Congmen who accompanied Patel while submission of memorandum were former PCC president Dhanendra Sahu, Ramchandra Singhdeo, Subhash Sharma, Vidhan Mishra, Rajendra Tiwari, Inderchand Dhariwal, Shailesh Nitin Trivedi, Amir Ali Farishta, Rajesh Bissa, Mahendra Chhabda, Sushil Anand Shukla, etc.
