Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh had to face embarrassing situation during his brief state visit on Monday when he found that none of the Congress leaders turned out to welcome him at Mana airport. Ramesh, who attended state government organised inaugural function for new district Sukma later in the day, was completely taken aback by the attitude of his partymen who baulked to even do the formality of greeting him despite prior information.
Notably, the Congress has dubbed the “new district inaugural programmes” of the government as its ulterior motive to make a preparatory ground to win 2013 Assembly elections by regaining public trust. Therefore, neither the leader of the opposition Ravindra Choubey, nor the party’s local public representatives have attended any of the district inauguration programmes by far.
When Ramesh announced to take part in Sukma district’s inaugural function during his previous visit, the state Congress leaders startled and they apparently anticipate their strategies to upset the government getting derailed in the backdrop of their own partyman attending government programme cum public rally as a Union minister.
The opposition intensified its activities against the government with the leadership the change and is continuously raising different issues both in Vidhan Sabha and streets since May 2011. When Ramesh got the portfolio of Union Rural Development Ministry, the party leaders informed him about large number of graft cases in Central schemes during his state visits. They also handed him evidences of irregularities to the minister urging him to take suitable action. They thought unlike other Union ministers, Ramesh would extend helping hand to them to achieve their goals but the minister’s balancing act with the state government has completely bewildered them.
In the past too, the party leaders have urged the senior leadership several times to instruct the Union ministers not to pat the state government during their Chhattisgarh visits as their gestures not only demoralise them, but also virtually prove their efforts to uproot the ruling party fruitless.
