CSPTCL’s undue spending ups power tariff: Cong

Raipur, January 12, 2012

The Congress on Thursday said that inordinate expenditure of Chhattisgarh State Power Transmission Company Limited (CSPTCL) had pushed up power tariff in recent years. “Ironically, the government keeps on claiming that Chhattisgarh is a power surplus state and is simultaneously burdening the consumers with high power tariff. This is happening due to its mismanagement and wrong policies,” said PCC’s chief spokesperson Shailesh Nitin Trivedi.
Strongly objecting proposed 30% power tariff hike sent by CSPTCL to Chhattisgarh State Electricity Regulatory Commission (CSERC), Trivedi said that it would deeply dent pockets of common people, especially farmers.
He said the expenditures of CSPTC suddenly shot up after it came into existence along with four other power companies on division of Chhattisgarh State Electricity Board (CSEB).
Notably, before division, the annual revenue requirement (ARR) of CSEB’s transmission department was about Rs 200-225 crore. “After division, the transmission company in its first year, i.e. 2009-10 submitted ARR of Rs 277.69 crore before CSERC which approved Rs 244.71 crore. In 2010-11 and 2011-12, the company’s ARR was Rs 524.20 crore and Rs 600.79 crore respectively. For next fiscal, the company submitted ARR of Rs 894.40 crore but the commission approved Rs 767.64 crore,” informed Trivedi.
“Surprisingly, since inception, the spending of production and distribution companies rose to 15% and 83% respectively while that of transmission company surged to 222%, an apparent indicator of corruption prevailed in the system,” he said.
