Cong slams govt for not extending paddy purchase date

Raipur, January 24, 2012

Slamming the government for not extending paddy procurement date and deciding to conclude the procedures on February 15, 2012, the Congress said the ruling party was insensitive towards farmers’ woes and had once again displayed its anti-farmer mindset.
“We were hoping that the government will announce to extend paddy purchase date in its January 21 cabinet meeting considering the inconvenience the farmers faced due to unseasonal rains in the beginning of this month, but unfortunately it could not happen,” said PCC president Nandkumar Patel and CLP leader Ravindra Choubey.
The duo claimed that paddy worth Rs 220 crore damaged due to rains. “The government deliberately ignored the warnings of meteorological department and did not take any proactive measure to protect the paddy stocked in open ground because it wanted to hide the irregularities done in paddy procurement process,” they said.
“The Congress has already expressed its concern over corruption prevailed in paddy purchase. We have received ample complaints that paddy from others states is being sold in the societies. There are also reports that stones have been found in gunny sacks. However, the government is silent and refraining from taking action against the guilty people, an apparent indicator that it is trying to protect them,” they alleged.
“The government has also spend crores on the name of paddy protection measures like purchasing tarpaulins and polythene to cover large stocks in open grounds but despite such arrangements the loss could not averted,” they said.
