Demands from govt to
issue white paper on farmers’ suicide
Raipur, January 03, 2012
The Congress has demanded Rs ten lakh compensation package for families
of farmers who have committed suicide. “The government is solely responsible
for farmers’ woes,” said fFormer
PCC president Dhanendra Sahu who also demanded issuance of white paper on increasing
suicidal cases of farmers. “The Congress also demands judicial probe into
farmers’ suicide,” he said while talking to the media persons at Congress
Bhawan on Tuesday.
“We will launch aggressive
agitation against the government if it would not address the problems of the
farmers,” Sahu said.
Citing examples of
recent suicides of farmers, he said it was unfortunate that neither Chief
Minister nor Agriculture Minister posed seriousness over such incidents and
felt it important to express government’s views.
“The farmers are
killing themselves because they are unable to clear their debts. This condition
occurred because their crops damaged on use of fertilisers and pesticides which
proved to be duplicate. Even the seeds provided by Seed Development Corporation
are sub-standard,” he said.
“If Agriculture
Minister can admit in Vidhan Sabha about sale of duplicate fertilisers and
pesticides in the state then why the government did not alerted farmers through
advertisements and other modes to avoid buying such items manufactured by those
companies which were found guilty of duplication,” he asked.
He further informed
that over fifty percent of the famers in the state were landless and hence they
do farming on rented agricultural lands. “But the Land Revenue department does
not keep record of these farmers as it only maintains record of land owners.
This is injustice to these farmers who do not get any kind of relief package
when their crops on rented lands get damaged. Thus, the department should also
keep their record to provide them every benefit in terms of relief and
compensation packages,” he said.
