Centre sanctions three road projects for state

Raipur, January 10, 2012

The Union Ministry of Rural Development has sanctioned three road projects using polymer-based technologies under PMGSY for Chhattisgarh. The roads will be constructed in Dantewada, Bijapur and Narayanpur districts. The estimated cost of these projects will be over Rs seven crore.
According to information, the roads will be constructed using the latest soil stabilisation techniques, which is an in-situ method of stabilising the soil with polymer in the liquid form. The technology has been accredited by Indian Road Congress while laboratory tests have been carried out at IIT Kharagpur.
The Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh, during his recent visit to Narayanpur, learnt that the non-availability of stone aggregate was one of the main problems in construction of roads in remote forest areas. The officials informed him that the stone aggregate was being brought from some hundred kilometers away.
The stone crushing units and queries too are not available in Dantewada, Bijapur and Narayanpur districts as majority of their lands come under forests and due to compulsion for the government to follow de-reservation procedures to divert forest lands.
Consequently, these problems have not only delayed road construction works in the three districts, but have also increased the estimated cost of the projects. The minister also felt that the lack of road connectivity too affected overall developmental activities and inclusive growth of three naxal-hit districts.
He said the implementation of new technology in road projects would not only reduce construction time but would also save valuable forests from being diverted.
