The Congress has claimed that paddy worth Rs 220 crore got damaged in recent rains. “The government’s negligent attitude resulted in such a huge loss. Although it claimed to have done adequate arrangement to save paddy from rains, the loss speaks bitter truth,” said chief Congress spokesperson Shailesh Nitin Trivedi.
“According to government claims, 40 lakh MT paddy worth Rs 4400 crore had been procured till last week. Since large amount of the paddy was stored in open grounds in absence of sufficient sheds, 5 percent of it, i.e. about two lakh MT paddy got drenched and damaged in rains. The estimated cost of this damaged paddy is about Rs 220 crore,” said Trivedi.
He said when the government spent crores in purchasing tarpaulin and polythene to protect paddy from rains then it should have succeeded in its objective. Sniffing corruption in purchase of rain preventive items, Trivedi said the government had never been serious in protecting paddy, hence neither it took any concrete measure beforehand nor it awakened when the meteorological department warned of rains in the state.
