Malnutrition in CG due to misuse of funds: Jogi

Raipur, January 24, 2012

Former Chief Minister and Congress legislator Ajit Jogi has alleged that malnutrition in Chhattisgarh was due to government’s negligent attitude and misuse of funds meant for the development of poor and tribals. “According to latest report of Centre’s National Family Health Survey (NFHS), Chhattisgarh stands fifth among the highly malnourished states of the country after Madhya Pradesh (MP) Jharkhand, Bihar and Orissa. All these states are either ruled or supported by the BJP and indicate that this forget people after coming in power,” said Jogi.
“In Chhattisgarh, the BJP government claims that it has developed the best public distribution system (PDS) in the country, but ironically it failed to check malnutrition, especially in tribal belts. This government rather misused the funds released by the Centre to develop the tribal regions. Hence, the basic facilities like road, water, electricity, medical, etc is missing in tribal areas,” he said.
He said the corrupt system had not even spared mid-day meal programme and the children of the impoverished families going to schools were being deprived of nourished food materials. “Similarly, female foeticide and child mortality due to malnutrition too have increased during BJP regime,” he added.
Jogi demanded from the government to quickly frame a work plan to effectively implement centre’s Food Security scheme besides ensuring provision of nutritious food to the schoolchildren under mid-day meal programme. He said the schemes meant for pregnant women and infant children should also be implemented strictly. He further demanded that malnourished children in remote tribal areas should be identified and given prompt treatment including nutritious food.
