Infant, pregnancy mortality rates up due to govt apathy: Jogi

Congress MLA Ajit Jogi on Wednesday alleged that infant and pregnancy mortality rates in the state had increased due to government’s apathetic attitude. “The condition is dismal throughout the state because the government has failed to provide basic health facilities to the people, especially in the remote areas,” said Jogi.
Indicating that about 30 pregnant women and 131 infants died in Bastar in the past five months, Jogi said the mortality rate in the tribal populated areas was more because the community, sub-health and Aanganbadi centres were devoid of radical medical facilities. “As a result, for every health problem, small or big, the people living in distant tribal areas are compelled to go to district hospitals. Some having serious problems even die in the midway before reaching the hospital,” Jogi said.
He said malnutrition and ignorance about diseases were others reasons of rising infant and pregnancy mortality rates. “The government is receiving ample fund from the Centre to create awareness about different types of diseases, nevertheless people are unaware about them.  This questions government’s commitment to improve health infrastructure in the state,” he said.
