The PCC president Nandkumar Patel has demanded from the government to provide at least Rs 50 crore as relief package to each of the flood-hit districts. “The earlier announcement of Rs five crore package each for these districts is not sufficient to compensate the loss incurred by the people,” he said after inspecting the affected areas of Raigarh and Janjgir-Champa districts on Wednesday.
“If the government would have taken proactive measures about 24 hours prior to the ruthless rains, much could have been saved,” he felt.
“The disaster due to rains this year is horrible. In fact, Raigarh and Janjgir-Champa districts have witnessed such a kind of rain fury after 1937. The flood completely destroyed about 22 villages in Raigarh and ten in Janjgir-Champa and the people there are homeless and in pathetic condition,” said Patel.
Pointing that the flood had damaged majority of the crops, Patel said farmers should be compensated adequately so that they might not get frustrated and decide to commit suicide due to financial crunch.
“The farmers get crops worth about Rs 20000 in one acre land while they spend no less than Rs 10000. In this scenario, if they would not get appropriate relief package from the government, their financial condition would aggravate and in low spirit they could even decide to end their life,” he feared.
