BJP MLA Devji Bhai Patel has expressed his concern that food adulteration was on rise in the state, however the government had not taken any preventive measure. Patel raised the issue of food adulteration through call attention notice at Vidhan Sabha on Wednesday.
He said horrifying results were came when 260 samples of different food stuffs were taken and tested in food testing laboratory in October-November 2011 as 127 were found adulterated. He said maximum adulteration was being done in milk and milk-made products including sweets.
He informed that there were about 400 dairies in capital, but none provide pure milk to the people. The dairy owners adulterate milk by adding urea, caustic soda and other harmful products in it. Even the cattle are given oxytocin injections get more milk, he said. He charged that the food officials never inspect the dairies.
He further informed that when the milk samples were tested in December 2011-January 2012 by the food officials, high adulteration was found in them. The medical experts said that such adulteration can cause cancer, kidney-related diseases, etc in people consuming milk, he added. He pointed that the government never taker action against the people engaged in food adulteration.
The Health and Family Welfare Minister Amar Agrawal said that food officials regularly conduct inspection of dairies, hotels and restaurants. He informed that the food department conducted inspection of 127 samples of different food materials in October-November 2011 and had found 52 below standard.
He further informed that ten samples of milk were tested in December 2011- January 2012 and only four were found substandard. He claimed that none of milk samples had been found adulterated by harmful products by far.
He said the department takes suitable action against the guilty people found involved in food adulteration under Food Conservation and Standard Act 2006.
