Cong demo on coalgate, police lathicharged protestors

Raipur, September 04, 2012

Thousands of protestors were arrested and about 20 sustained injuries on Tuesday during police lathicharge while large number of Congress workers took out rallies from 15 different locations of Raipur to gherao Chief Minister Raman Singh demanding his resignation into coalgate scam.

Condemning lathicharge on agitators, state Congress president Nandkumar Patel said that the ruling party resorted to repressive action to throttle the peaceful movement against the CM for giving contract of commercial mining of Bhatgaon-II and Bhatgaon-II extension coal blocks to single bidder SMS Infrastructure Limited despite its ineligibility.

“We also condemn the government for pressing large number of police personnel in the capital city and putting barricades all around to thwart our peaceful movement as a consequence the commuters faced inconvenience the entire day,” he said.

“The CM was scared of our protest movement hence he had asked the police to cordon off the entire area around his residence,” Patel said.

During the CM-gherao programme, senior party leaders including AICC general secretary state Congress incharge BK Hariprasada, Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Processing Industry Charandas Mahant, PCC president Nandkumar Patel, CLP leader Ravindra Choubey, veteran party leader Vidyacharan Shukla and others addressed partymen at different locations.
