CPI demands rollback in diesel, LPG price hike

Raipur, September 14, 2012

Communist Party of India (Marxist) has demanded rollback in diesel and domestic liquid petroleum gas (LPG) price hike by Centre. “The Rs five hike in diesel prices and provision of only six subsidised LPG cylinders in a year will deeply dent the common man’s pocket. The Centre should quickly revoke the anti-people decision,” said CPI(M) secretary Dharmraj Mahapatra on Friday.

He said the government’s decision would not only escalate inflation, but also affect the agriculture sector severely.

“The government defends it decision by arguing that oil companies are facing heavy loss due to booming diesel prices in international market is mere deception as is evident by the massive profit earned by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) in 2011-12, i.e. Rs 2513 crore. In this fiscal too, the ONGC marked over 48 percent profit in the first quarter till June 30,” he said.

The other state-owned companies including Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) too posted whopping profit in 2011-12, i.e. Rs 4265.27 crore, Rs 911 crore and Rs 1546.68 crore respectively,” he added.

He informed that the HPCL went on to earn record profit of 312 percent in the last quarter of 2011-12.

“Ironically, this UPA government has given subsidies amounting Rs 13 lakh crore to the capitalists in last couple of years but when it is expected to do the same for the common people, it refuses on pretext of fund crunch. This exposes the Centre’s double-face,” he said urging people to strongly protest the government’s decision.

He said the CPI(M) will launch massive protest movement against the Centre for taking anti-people decision.
