Don’t divide poor on BPL, APL categories: CPI

Raipur, September 12, 2012

Communist Party of India (Marxist) has asked the Centre not to divide poor on the name of BPL and APL categories. Every citizen has right to get ration and hence the Centre should provide food security to everyone, said the CPI(M) leaders during their day-long dharna at Raipur under the party’s countrywide movement in favour of food security.

The party said the proposed food security law would only divide the poor into two different categories and consequently sizable chunk of the nation’s population would not get ration at low rate.

The party hit hard at the Centre for giving pretext of no fund to give relief to the common people who are burdened by price rise.

“The Union government would only have to inflate its annual budget by Rs 30000-40000 crore to provide food grains to every citizen at low rate. Ironically, it is disinterested in taking initiative for the poor while it readily gives waiver of over Rs five lakh crore to the giant capitalists through its annual budget,” they pointed.

They demanded from the Centre to close down futures market and implement recommendations of Swaminathan committee that has given significant inputs on provision of more benefits to the farmers in terms of crop rates, etc.

On coalgate the party said both Congress and BJP leaders were tainted in the scam and demanded high-level probe into the matter and stern action against guilty people.

The dharna programme was addressed by CPI(M) state secretary MK Nandi, divisional secretary Dharmraj Mahapatra, Sanjay Parate, Wakil Bharti, AK Lal, Gajendra Jha, US Purame, etc.
