Hitting back at Asaram Bapu for his stinging remark against UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, the state Congress said it was unfortunate that the saint used religious platform for political comment. “Asaram himself is a controversial person as he is surrounded by several allegations. His stricture against Sonia was unexpected and defamatory,” said the PCC president Nandkumar Patel and leader of Congress legislators party (CLP) Ravindra Choubey on Wednesday. They alleged that Asaram’s comments were provocative and intended to disturb communal harmony in the state.
They said Asaram targeted Sonia in presence of Chief Minister Raman Singh which indicated that he wanted to please the head of the state by using foul language against the Congress chief.
The duo also objected over Asaram’s self comparison with Mahatma Gandhi and asked how could the self-proclaimed saint leading a luxurious life promote himself as equivalent to the ‘father of the nation’ who believed in simplicity throughout his life.
The Lok Sabah member from Korba Charandas Mahant sought unconditional apology from Asaram for his remark against Sonia and said he had not right to point out fingers towards anybody when he himself was facing too many charges after disclosure of mysterious deaths of two children in his ashram.
Senior Congress leader Ajit Jogi said Asaram’s statement against Sonia was insult to all the women. He asked why the saint who was supposed to give religious discourses suddenly adopted political language. He said Asaram should also make his links public with the state CM.
The PCC spokesperson Ramesh Varlyani, Hasan Khan, Ravindra Shukla, DCC president Inderchand Dhariwal, Pradesh Mahila Congress (PMC) general secretary Ayesha Siddiqui and other Congress leaders also termed Asaram’s remark against Sonia as pro-BJP.
Terming Asaram as fake and opportunist, the Congress leaders demanded from the state government take suo moto cognisance of his derogatory remarks against Sonia and lodge criminal case against him. They further demanded from the government to prohibit entry of Asaram in Chhattisgarh.
