Govt constructs 825 minor irrigation ponds in last 4 yrs

With an objective to provide sufficient water to the farmers for their agricultural lands, the state government has constructed 825 minor irrigation ponds in the last four years. These ponds have been constructed under the government’s minor irrigation project. The rainwater is being collected in these ponds, informed the officials of Agriculture department. Besides providing irrigation water to the farmers, these ponds also increase groundwater table, they said.
The Agriculture Minister Chandrashekhar Sahu informed that the government was committed to provide sufficient irrigation water to the farmers owing to which it was adopting novel and natural techniques to store water. “To make use of rainwater, the government had decided to construct small and low cost ponds,” he said.
Through these ponds, the government is providing water to over 18000 hectares of agricultural land. “Surely, irrigation facilities have been increased after construction of minor irrigation ponds we would make attempts to enhance them in future as well,” he said.
“The capacity of each pond is to provide water for at least 40 hectares of land,” Sahu said. The ponds are being constructed either in the government lands or in the lands donated by the farmers.
The government also provides cent percent financial aid to construct pond under minor irrigation project, the minister informed. The government has set target to construct 123 ponds under the project in the current financial year, he said.
