Eligible SC, ST students not getting scholarship timely: NSUI

Department was not disbursing scholarship to about 70 eligible SC and ST students studying in Columbia College in spite of fund approval by the state government.
The NSUI’s state general secretary Subodh Haritwal informed that the government had sanctioned Rs 1635250 as scholarship fund for the 70 students of academic session 2008-09 on February 18, 2010. “But surprisingly, the students have not received their scholarship till date which indicates the department’s apathy towards the needy ones who arrive in the state capital from distant parts of the state to pursue their higher studies,” Haritwal said.
Alleging that the Tribal Development Department had deliberately delayed disbursal of the scholarship, the NSUI members led by Haritwal on Friday gheraoed the department office and demanded from the Commissioner to quickly take action in favour of the 70 students.
When the NSUI agitators learnt that the Commissioner was not at office, they shouted slogans against him and locked the office for about an hour. Later, they submitted a memorandum to the Assistant Director of department on the name of Commissioner.
“The officer in the Tribal Development office assured us that the Commissioner would available on June 6, 2011 and would take necessary action on our demand,” Haritwal said.
“If the Commissioner would not take prompt action and disburse scholarships to the students then we will launch aggressive agitation against the department,” he said.
The NSUI agitators who accompanied Haritwal were – Gulzeb Ahmed, Shahbaz Hussein, Ajay Pal, Nadeem Salat, Shashikant Barode, Aditya Agrawal, Danish Rahman, Chinu Pandey, Mohammad Sabir and others.
