Govt to commence 3-year work plan for sickle cell

During 4th International Congress on Sickle Cell Disease from Nov 22-27

The government will commence its three-year work plan for prevention and treatment of sickle cell during the 4th International Congress on Sickle Cell Disease (ICSCD) to be held in the state capital from November 22-27, 2010. Under this work plan, the Health department will conduct blood test of children and youths between 14-18 years of age and pregnant women across the state. The government will spend about Rs 25 crore on this project.
For complete treatment facility for sickle cell patients, the government has also formed a special medical cell that would start functioning from November 22. There would be separate arrangement of 20-30 beds in the hospital under this cell and all types of tests and treatments pertaining to sickle cell would be provided to the patients.
The special guests in the inaugural function of six-day ICSCD would be former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam and Congo’s first lady Antoinette Sassou Nguesso.
About 200 representatives from different states of the country and one hundred from abroad are likely to participate in the conference that would focus on management and prevention of sickle cell in developing societies.
The conference would be inaugurated at the Pt Jawahar Lal Nehru Memorial Medical College auditorium. However, considering the strength of the participants and insufficient space at medical college auditorium, the government can shift the venue to the auditorium of Pt Ravishankar Shukla University. All the sessions of the symposium would be held at a Jail road-based hotel.
The conference will begin on November 22 with registration followed by inaugural ceremony. Later, there will be one session of NGOs, social reformers and activists who would present their activities and views on sickle cell. 
On November 23, there will be session for policy makers, planners and critics besides counseling and education on sickle cell.
On November 24, there will be four sessions including free paper session during which eight papers on sickle cell would be presented followed by
preliminary session I in which prevalence of sickle cell disease would be discussed. Thereafter, discussion on clinical presentation and complication of sickle cell would be done in preliminary session II. The final session, i.e. preliminary session III would be on diagnosis of sickle cell.
On November 25, there would again be four sessions including free paper session followed by preliminary session IV, V and VI in which present management, current research and future research on sickle cell would be discusses respectively.
There will be field camp for sickle cell patients on November 26 while one session on the following day, i.e. preliminary session VII on stem cell therapy and other newer therapies on sickle cell.



National policy to combat sickle cell must: CM

To prevent occurrence of sickle cell is not only a challenging task for Chhattisgarh, but also for other states in the country and hence the Centre should prepare a national policy to combat this diseases. Chief Minister Raman Singh expressed these views on Wednesday at his residential office while he was reviewing the preparations of 4th International Congress on Sickle Cell Disease that would begin in the city on November 22. “We can create awareness about sickle cell among the citizens only when there will be a national policy for which the state government would soon send a letter to the Union government,” said Singh instructing the officials to take help of sickle cell expert while drafting the letter. The meeting was attended by Health Secretary Vikassheel, Secretary General Administration Nidhi Chibbar, CM’s Special Secretary Subodh Singh Director Health Services P Anbalgan, IG Mukesh Gupta, Raipur Collector Rohit Yadav, Raipur SP Dipanshu Kabra, RMC Commissioner Om Prakash Choudhary, Ambedkar Hospital Superintendent Dr Vivek Choudhary, the organising secretary of sickle cell international symposium Dr PK Patra and incharge Director Dr A Shukla.



New community bldg to be dedicated to public today

The Urban Administration and Development Minister Rajesh Munat will dedicate the newly constructed community building at Tatibandh to the public on Thursday. The RMC constructed this building at the cost of Rs 98 lakh. The area of the building is 450 sq mtr while the total area of the premises is 3200 sq mtr. The edifice comprises of one big hall, stage and porch in the ground floor and three rooms and office room in the first floor. Besides, both the floors have wash rooms. The municipal has also developed a lawn in the premises of the community building besides constructing boundary wall to prevent entry of stray cattle and dogs. The civic officials informed that the building would be available for cultural programmes, marriages and other functions to the public. During the public dedication programme, Mayor Kiranmayi Nayak, municipal Speaker Sanjay Shrivastava, Shaheed Bhagat Singh ward corporator Sunil Chandrakar, zone 8 president Narad Kaushal and president of RMC’s Public Works department Anwar Hussein would also be present.


RMC to remove water hyacinths from city’s ponds

The municipal corporation will remove water hyacinths from the ponds of the city. A directive in this regard was issued by Mayor Kiranmayi Nayak while she was inspecting the sanitary works being carried out in the wards of zone 6. She said the water hyacinths from Maharajbandh Talab should be prominently removed to preserve one of the oldest and largest ponds of the city. She further instructed the officials to write a letter to Chhattisgarh Tourism Board seeking permission to launch campaign to remove water hyacinths from Budha Talab. The president of Revenue department Manoj Kandoi, who accompanied Nayak during her inspection, asked the officials to provide the municipal’s vacant mela ground space besides Motibagh to the woolen cloth sellers. Nayak too directed the officials to keep the particular mela ground reserve for those vendors who sell different items either according to seasons or during festivals. She said such vendors should not be allowed to operate their business in any other location within municipal limits other than reserved mela ground.



‘SIC did not impose Rs 25000 penalty on RMC Commissioner’

The State Information Commission (SIC) never imposed Rs 25000 penalty on municipal Commissioner Om Prakash Choudhary pertaining to complaint lodged by Congress spokesperson Rajesh Bissa to the commission.
The clarification was given by the civic administration on Wednesday that added that certain people had merely spread rumours against Choudhary. The civic administration further informed that the SIC’s last hearing regarding Bissa’s complaint held on November 9, 2010 during which Sanjay Thakur represented the applicant while Assistant Revenue Officer HK Chandrakar was present on municipal’s behalf.
The commission has directed the municipal corporation to submit detailed information regarding the applicant’s complaint in 15 days while the next hearing would be on January 7, 2010.
Notably, Bissa had earlier alleged that the SIC had shot penalty notice of Rs 25,000 Choudhary for not following its instructions to lodge complaint with the police regarding municipal’s lost documents from zonal offices that contained information about road works.


Govt to soon install incinerator to dispose off bio medical waste

The state government will soon install incinerator to dispose off bio medical waste of the city. The superintendent of Ambedkar Hospital Dr Vivek Choudhary gave this assurance to Mayor Kiranmayi Nayak on Wednesday who met him along with other municipal officials seeking quick installation of incinerator to maintain hygienic condition in the capital.
Choudhary informed that the Health department had already provided Rs 88 lakh for purchase and installation of incinerator and other relevant works in connection to bio medial waste management and only required adequate stretch of land that would be provided by the municipal corporation.
Nayak informed the hospital superintendent that about 2.5 acres land filling site is available for the bio waste management besides Sarona-based trenching ground.
Later, Nayak inspected the Ambedkar hospital premises and asked the officials to promptly make arrangements to drain out waste water from the hospital. She also asked the officials to increase the capacity of the sulabh toilet located in the hospital premises and to lift the heaping medical waste behind hospital.
Notably, Nayak has sternly asked the nursing homes and hospitals to maintain hygiene in their ambience and to throw bio medical only trenching ground. In this connection, a delegation of nursing home owners had held discussion with Nayak and requested her to rapidly commence bio medial waste management system by providing land to the government for installation of incinerator.
At present, the nearest incinerator is installed in Bhilai and the bio waste is being transported through vans by one E-tech company which is insufficient to clean up all the waste from the capital. The municipal will provide the 2.5 acre filling site to the government to dispose off bio waste adjacent to the site being provided to Paradigm Environmental Strategies Private Limited for implementation of solid waste management system.


Tribals most affected by centre’s wrong policies: BJP ST Morcha

Warns of agitation if its 8-point demands would not be fulfilled

The tribals of the country are most affected by the UPA-led Union government’s wrong policies. The allegation against the Centre was leveled by BJP ST Morcha on the second day of the three-day meeting and training programme of the Morcha’s national executive that commenced in the state capital on November 9, 2010.
The Morcha has made eight-point demands and has warned the Centre that it would launch nationwide agitation if its demands would not be fulfilled.
The Morcha prominently demanded from the Union government to curb inflation owing to which the prices of the essential commodities including foodgrains have skyrocketed and consequently affecting the life of tribals.
It further demanded that the Centre should stop linking the Hindu organisations including nationalist ones like Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh with terrorist outfits.
The Morcha said the Centre should quickly formulate solution to prevent rising incidents of terrorism, naxalism, murders, rape and fake cases in the tribal populated regions. The Morcha also demanded appropriate rehabilitation package for the tribals displaced due to industrialisation. It categorically said that the tribal who have converted should not get benefits of reservation. It further said that the tribals should get land against land and cultural buildings should be constructed to preserve the tribal tradition. The Morcha said a tribal building should be constructed in New Delhi for the programmes of the community. The Morcha also demanded separate Tribal departments in all the states and effective measures to check fake tribal certificates.
