NSUI demands extension of winter holidays in schools

For 15 days due to chilly winds

Raipur, January 07, 2011

Considering extreme cold weather in the state, the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) has demanded from Collector Rohit Yadav to extend the winter holidays of schoolchildren for 15 days. In this regard, a delegation of NSUI members led by organisation’s general secretary Subodh Haritwal gave a memorandum to the Collector on Friday.
The NSUI members said that majority of schools are in the outskirts of the city owing to which the schoolchildren, especially kids studying in primary and pre-primary classes, who wake up at early morning are facing inconvenience due to bleak weather.
The delegation further pointed out that the other district administrations of the state had already extended winter holidays by one week and only the schoolchildren of Raipur are reluctantly enduring chilly winds.
“If the district administration would not take initiative on our memorandum and announce extension of winter holidays for schoolchildren, our organisation would go to each school and urge the respective managements to close the institution for next 15 days,” the delegation warned.
The delegation of NSUI was comprised of Ismail Ahmed, Gulzeb Ahmed, Shahbaz Hussein, Nadem Salat, Bablu Raza and Pankaj Sharma.

BJP fumes over Mayor’s remarks on RMC Speaker

Raipur, January 07, 2011

The Opposition BJP at RMC has taken strong objection over Mayor Kiranmayi Nayak’s stinging remarks on municipal Speaker Sanjay Shrivastava. As a mark of protest, the BJP corporators led by their leader Subhash Tiwari on Friday raised slogans against Nayak seeking apology from her in front of municipal headquarters at Malviya road.
Sharply reacting over Nayak’s statement, Tiwari said, “It is unfortunate that the Mayor uttered recklessly about the Speaker and termed his value equivalent to that of the corporators. This is sheer insult to the corporators whom the Mayor seems to consider as nonentity.”
Tiwari said the BJP would not tolerate such demeaning remarks against the corporators who had been elected in a democratic manner.
“In fact, the mayor in some of large civic bodies of metropolitan cities is being elected by the corporators which indicate their value as well as significance. Even this was the cult in the Raipur some 15 years back. Now if the Nayak says that the Speaker is valueless and only peer to the corporators then is she not trying challenge the self-esteem of the elected public representatives,” Tiwari asked.
He said Nayak had also ridiculed the Panchayati Raj system that was the dream concept of former Prime Minister Rajeev Gandhi.
Notably, Nayak’s comments came in wake of Shrivastava’s interaction with the media persons on completion of one year of the RMC’s elected body at office. Nayak alleged that Shrivastava was playing party politics in spite of assuming Speaker’s post. A day before Shrivastava’s media interaction, Nayak had invited the scribes to speak about her party’s achievements in one year at municipal corporation.

Cong-BJP spewed venom against each other

Raipur, January 07, 2011

The supporters of Mayor Kiranmayi Nayak and Speaker Sanjay Shrivastava shouted slogans in front of RMC headquarters on Friday. The members of both ruling Congress and Opposition BJP kept on blaming each other’s party for polluting the environment in the municipal corporation. The blamegame in terms of slogans persisted for over an hour after which the BJP corporators led by their leader Subhash Tiwari ceased their protest. Later, Tiwari alleged that the Mayor attempted to obstruct their protest. “We had earlier announced that all the BJP corporators would jointly protest against the Mayor’s remarks but suddenly the members of National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) along with other Congress workers reached in front of RMC headquarters and started shouting slogans on Mayor’s instructions. The BJP would not brook hindrances created by any political party during its agitations and demonstrations in future,” said Tiwari.
