Commencing its anti-encroachment drive in one of the busiest market places of the city Gol Bazar, the RMC on Wednesday demolished 20 illegal extensions done by the shopkeepers from Sharda chowk to Banjari chowk via Rahmania chowk.
The action was jointly taken by the municipal’s Town Planning and Building Permission department and the traffic police.
Protesting the demolition works, the angry shopkeepers had heated exchanges with sub-engineer Abhash Mishra and even tried to assault him, however the police personnel controlled the situation.
The municipal Commissioner Om Prakash Choudhary said the illegal construction over drains and on roads was not disrupting RMC’s regular sanitation works, but was even causing traffic bottlenecks.
He said the drive would be continued in Gol Bazar till the demolition squad removes all the encroachments.
He has cautioned the shopkeepers to voluntarily demolish their encroachments to avoid stern action against them.
He said the civic administration would also impose fine to the tune of Rs 1000 on the illegal encroachers in Gol Bazar area.

Stray cattle wrecking mayhem in city
RMC to launch campaign to catch stray cattle
Raipur, Aug 18, 2010
Maundering stray cattle are wrecking mayhem in the capital and their omnipresence, especially on main roads, has virtually turned the city into an accident prone zone. The reports of people including pedestrians and motorists sustaining injuries due to stray cattle have become order of the day. Considering this, the RMC has decided launch a massive campaign to catch stray cattle and to send them to kanji house.
The municipal Commissioner Om Prakash Choudhary has issued a directive in this regard to the Revenue department and has asked the officials to impose Rs 500 fine on the owners of the stray cattle. He has also appealed to owners not to leave their cattle to wander on public places.
The frequent bovine movement on roads also disrupts the city traffic. Even the main roads including GE Road, Malviya Road, MG Road, etc are not an exception. While complaining about the spurt in the number of bulls and cows, the residents of different wards inform that they always fear sending their children to nearby gardens to play or for bicycle ride on road during evening hours because of maundering bovines. The stray cattle not only block traffic but also try to maul passers-by many a time, they said. Even the fitness freaks including senior citizens have quit going on morning and evening walk as they found themselves incapable of avoiding lurking dangers.
These stray cattle are causing inconvenience to the people not only inside the city, but even in the outskirts. Where the movement of heavy vehicles is more in Ring Road No 1 & 2, the stray cattle in groups could be easily be found squatting in the middle of roads.
In this scenario, the people riding two-wheelers and adopting these roads become more vulnerable to mishap, especially during night hours when the motorist fail to notice dark-coloured cattle, which camouflage with dim light. The motorists say even if they identify any cattle on road from a certain distance and blow horn continuously to force them to move, their attempts fail. It is really difficult to predict the behaviour of cattle as it could come in front of vehicles in no time, they added.
In the busy markets of the city, the scene is more pathetic as the shopkeepers and street vendors, especially vegetable vendors, could be seen pushing the cattle or beating them with stick frequently.
The RMC Commissioner felt that it was high time take stern action against the owners of the stray cattle and hoped the drive to catch such bovines would improve the city conditions.
When asked about the reason for stray cattle occupying roads, the veterinary experts said as humans the bovines too prefer clean space to sit. Notably, several dairy owners as well as the individuals who own a couple of cattle usually leave them to wander, especially during night hours.
The civic Commissioner has asked the officials to regularly monitor cattle catching drive and not to stop it until reckless owners improve their habit.
