To dispose of biomedical waste

Raipur, November 23, 2010

The incinerator to dispose of biomedical waste is likely to be installed in six months. The government has already sanctioned Rs 75 lakh to purchase this equipment. The government has also approved an additional fund of Rs 13 lakh pertaining to biomedical waste management process. According to information, the Health department will invite tenders to buy incinerator in the first week of January 2010 after acquiring 2.5 acres land from the municipal corporation to install this equipment. After installation, the entire management of biomedical waste as well as maintenance of incinerator would be done by the RMC.
The superintendent of Ambedkar Hospital Dr Vivek Choudhary has sent a letter to the Health secretary informing him about the provision of land for biomedical waste management from the RMC. Choudhary has requested from the Health department to quickly commence the land acquisition work from the municipal so that the tendering and installation process of incinerator could be completed in next six months before the next rainy season.
“We hope that the municipal corporation would begin disposing of hospital waste in an environment friendly manner through incinerator by summer 2011,” said Dr Choudhary.
The city was desperately requiring proper biomedical waste management process with the emergence of too many private nursing homes in the past couple of years. According to municipal’s Health department, there are about 200 big and medium-size hospitals and nursing homes functioning in the capital.
By far, with no disposable unit for biomedical waste and lethargic attitude of the municipal, these hospitals were recklessly throwing such waste in their surrounding posing threat to the health of nearby residents and creating unhygienic atmosphere.
But, about six months back, the RMC suddenly cautioned these hospitals to avoid creating insanitation in their ambience. It also constituted zonal health teams to regularly inspect the nursing homes and to take strong action against them besides imposing heavy fine if they would be found violating municipal norms.
At present, the nearest incinerator is installed in Bhilai and the bio waste is being transported through light vehicles by one E-tech company which is insufficient to clean up all the waste from the capital.
