RMC seals 35 illegal mobile towers

Raipur, December 09, 2010

The municipal corporation on Thursday sealed about 35 illegal mobile towers erected in the residential and commercial parts of the capital. The sealing of towers began after the apparent directives of the civic Commissioner Om Prakash Choudhary who said that the RMC would take stern action against those telecom operators who have installed such structures in the residential and commercial areas without obtaining No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the municipal corporation.
In this regard, the zonal commissioners instantly prepared list of illegal mobile towers of their respective regions and submitted to Choudhary on Thursday. In the first phase, the RMC has commenced sealing of the illegal structures at zonal level with the help of Chhattisgarh State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (CSPDCL).
The RMC zonal squads have switched off the power connections of the mobile towers. In the second phase, the CSPDCL will disconnect the power connections of the mobile towers and in the third and the last phase the municipal’s demolition squad will remove the structures if the telecom operators would not remove them voluntarily within the given timeframe.
The civic officials informed that the erection of mobile towers is strictly prohibited in gardens, parks and reserved lands for open space and roads. To install towers in the residential and commercial areas, the telecom companies are supposed to first produce the reports of structure stability test of the particular building before the municipal.
The test should be conducted by the chartered engineer authorised by the municipal corporation. The telecom companies are fully responsibility of any loss in terms of properties and life if any mishap occurs due to damage in building because of towers, said officials.
But the telecom companies are not following any norm and have installed structures for every 5000 population instead of 10000.
The residents have lodged complaints to their local corporators several times pertaining to mobile towers installed and demanded their removal pointing their ill affects due to emission of harmful radiation that causes cancer and other dangerous diseases, but none of the public representative raised the issue to the top civic authorities in the past.
There are 127 illegal mobile towers in the eight zones. The highest number of illegal structures is in zone 6 where the telecom companies have installed about 30 towers. In zone 8, there are 22 illegal towers while zones 4 and 2 have 19 and 16 structures respectively. There are 13 illegal towers zones 1 and 5 each while seven each in zones 3 and 7.
The maximum illegal towers were sealed in zone 5 and 8. The zone 5 commissioner Lokesh Chandravanshi and his subordinates sealed nine structures in their region while eight towers were sealed in zone 8 by the team led by zonal town planner Yogendra Verma.
In Zone 1, the team led by zone commissioner BR Agrawal sealed six illegal towers. In zone 2, three structures were sealed by zone commissioner Vinod Pandey and his team.
The zone 3 commissioner Manoranjan Sarkar carried out operation near CM house where two towers were sealed.
Similarly, four towers were sealed in zone 4 & 7 by joint action taken by zone commissioners Rajesh Rathore (zone 4) and P Rajesh Naidu (zone 7).

Professor Pati further informed that the varsity had planned to curtail the span of the lectures and make them more comprehensive and example oriented. “We will utilise the curtailed time On the other hand, we will prolong the period of student-professor interactions.”
The varsity’s faculty members too have been asked to avoid speaking at length on their research and development works and prominently speak on inspirational inventions, discoveries and creativities of the scientists.
When asked what did the students liked most in the camp I, Professor Pati said, “They took more interest in laboratory visits as they found the practical works appealing.”
He informed that about fifty percent of the applications in the camp I and II arrived via e-mail. “This shows that the school students are fast becoming net savvy as they are inclined towards Information Communication and Technology (ICT),” Professor Pati said.
