Shun colonial robes, use desi dress: NSUI to RSU

Warns to protest varsity’s convocation ceremony if its would not be met

Raipur, January 10, 2011

The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) has demanded from Pt Ravishankar Shukla University to shun colonial robes in the convocation ceremony and use desi dress instead. In this regard, the NSUI members led by their state president Sanjeev Shukla on Monday demonstrated through banners and posters in front of varsity’s administrative office before the commencement of RSU’s executive council meeting.
The NSUI also demanded from the RSU administration to quickly prepare university anthem. The NSUI members categorically warned the varsity that they would aggressively protest the convocation ceremony if their demanded would not be fulfilled in next coming days.
“The students, professors and the invited guests who distribute degrees and medals still wear colored costumes along with mortarboard (cap) during the varsity’s convocation ceremonies. This apparently signifies that we are following the colonial legacy. Being an independent country, the Indian universities should stop this tradition and must adopt desi dress that could reflect the country’s rich culture and age-old lifestyle,” said the NSUI members.
“We have also repeatedly requested from the RSU vice chancellor Professor Shiv Kumar Pandey to take stern action against those responsible ones who are delaying the preparation of varsity anthem. The anthem would not only be a linking factor for existing students as well as ex-alumni, but would also be pride of the varsity and be played during all the RSU events being conducted in every academic session,” they added.
The RSU’s 17th convocation ceremony would be organised at the varsity auditorium on January 24, 2011 for which gowns have already been arrived from New Delhi. The costumes are in three colours. The black and red coloured cloaks would be for the gold medal winners and degrees holders while the invited guests will wear maroon ones.

AICM demands more power to improve basic infra of urban people

Raipur, January 10, 2011

The All India Council of Mayors (AICM) has demanded from the Centre to give more power and sphere to the civic bodies so that they could improve the basic infrastructure of the urban people. The AICM put its demand during the council’s two-day meeting of executive committee at Cuttack (Odisha) that was also attended by Raipur Municipal Corporation (RMC) Mayor Kiranmayi Nayak.
In this 100th edition of AICM conference, the mayors once again requested from the Union government to quickly implement the 74th amendment of the Constitution. The council further demanded that the Centre should adopt universal procedure for election of mayors across the country and their tenure too must be same.
During the conference, two technical sessions were also organised which were chaired by AICM president Ashutosh Varshney from Aligarh.  Varshney expressed his concern over the plight of major cities of the country and felt that the Centre must prepare effective work-plan to improve their basic infrastructure.
In the meeting, the mayors also discussed over the ongoing cold wave condition prevailing in the country and regretted that even the large civic bodies do not have provision of night shelters for impoverished class who spend their nights on streets. They said even the basic facilities like road, water, electricity and sanitation become secondary during such extreme cold conditions and the civic bodies need to make night shelter arrangement for poor. For this, the mayors would demand succor from their respective state governments and Centre as well.
In addition, the mayors discussed over urban poor and the schemes launched by the civic bodies for their upliftment. Holding the state governments responsible for increasing urban population, the council said the negligence resulted in rise in the list of poor and slum dwellers in cities.
The meeting was attended by about 22 mayors and over 100 delegates from different parts of the country.
