CM politicising sports award: Congress

Alleges junior player preferred over senior

Raipur, October 30, 2010

The District Congress Committee (DCC) has alleged that the Chief Minister Raman Singh was politicising the sports award to be given to the state’s outstanding player during Rajyotsav 2010 at Science College ground on November 1, 2010. “It is unfortunate that the CM had to play petty politics during selection of the eligible player for the Gundadhoor award,” said DCC president Inderchand Dhariwal and general secretary Dr Niranjan Haritwal on Saturday.
“If the sports award would be fixed at CM level then what would be the credibility of the other awards?” the duo asked pointing that Singh had mounted pressure on the selection committee to pick a junior hockey player Mrinal Choubey from his legislative Assembly area. They demanded from the government to give Gundadhoor award to Shaba Anjum, a senior hockey player who had scored several goals and won matches for the country.
“The government finalised Choubey’s name for the prestigious award putting aside all the conditions and norms which is intolerable. The Congress would complaint against the government biased attitude to the Governor Shekhar Dutt,” the dup said.
Dhariwal, who has earlier been the member of whip committee under Madhya Pradesh Council of Sports and former president of Women Hockey Association, informed that the selection norms for sports award fixed by government clearly indicates that the senior player who had either participated in any national-level tournament or had represented the national team should be considered as eligible candidate.
“Choubey is a junior player and the sports award can be conferred upon him even after two years, but preferring him over the most eligible and deserving candidate like Anjum is a clear injustice,” said Dhariwal.
