Raipur, September 21, 2010
The three-day Youth Congress (YC) elections for nine legislative constituencies of Raipur district concluded peacefully on Tuesday. On the final day, Indrajeet Gehlot (51 votes), Sunil Kukreja (44 votes) and Sushil Agrawal (38 votes) were elected as presidents working committees of Raipur South, North and West respectively. The Lok Sabha Returning Officer (LRO) Ganesh Langote informed that the aim to conduct fair and transparent elections in Raipur district had been achieved completely and the election team would be busy in state and Lok Sabha (LS) level polls from Wednesday onwards
The election team was already aware that among the nine constituencies, it would really be a challenging task to conduct polls for Raipur South, North and West, however, it had decided not to pose relenting face towards the disturbing candidates and their supporters. “We had decided to stick to the rules and to take stern action against the obstructing elements according to the directives of the High Command,” said Langote.
The vice presidents elected from Raipur South, North and West were Rahul Tiwari (37 votes), Sheikh Musheer (32 votes) and Kishanlal Bazari (33 votes) respectively.
Among the delegates, the highest vote getters were – Mohammad Tanveer Khan (28 votes) and Alok Kumar Pandey (26 votes) from Raipur South, Deepak Mishra (39 votes) and Aziz Bhinsara (18 votes) from Raipur North and Amit Sharma (24 votes) and Sandeep Kataria (24 votes) from Raipur West.
Several new faces emerged in the working committees and among delegates in the three-day polls. However, the contestants from different camps in the Congress also succeeded in making their inroads in working committees and delegates. Although, former Chief Minister Ajit Jogi’s son Amit Jogi had recently announced that he would not contest for YC president post, however a sizable chunk of his Jogi supporters fraying for working committees and delegates came out as triumphant. The other gainers from the polls were YC president candidate Vikas Upadhyay and Ajaz Dhebar whose name was removed from the president’s candidature on charges of irregularities as the staunch supporters of both these leaders too managed to win the polls.
Notably, after completion of polls in all the constituencies, there would be ten members in each working committee and ten delegates. All of these elected candidates would cast their vote for state level and Lok Sabha level elections. The member of working committees would not be allowed to contest in the polls, but the delegates there is no such restriction for the delegates.
