3-day YC polls begin today



For nine legislative constituencies of Raipur district

356 candidates file nomination papers, ten rejected, 1448 voters to participate in polls

The three-day Youth Congress (YC) elections for nine legislative constituencies of Raipur district will commence from Sunday. “We are ready to conduct YC elections transparently. We have already cautioned the candidates in fray and the voters to refrain to create any obstacle during polling process. We will also take stern disciplinary action if anyone would adopt wrong means during polling,” said the Lok Sabha Returning Officer (LRO) Ganesh Langote on Saturday.
The polls will be held in Congress Bhawan from 8 am to 5 pm. “We will stick to predefined times for polls and no voter would be allowed to participate in the procedures after 5 pm,” Langote said.
Among the nine legislative constituencies, Balodabazar, Bhatapara and Abhanpur will go on polls on Sunday (September 19), Dharsiva, Arang and Raipur Rural on Monday (September 20) and Raipur South, West and North on Tuesday (September 21).
Langote informed that 356 candidates had filed nomination papers to contest Assembly level polls. “About ten forms were rejected during scrutiny either for not meeting election norms or due to flaws,” he said.
The age limit to contest Assembly level YC elections is up to 35. The nomination forms were distributed till September 15, 2010. The candidates belonging to general category had to pay Rs 1500 to obtain nomination form while the SC, ST, women and candidates living below poverty line (BPL) got the forms at discounted rate of Rs 750.
Langote informed that all the candidates had submitted the forms by September 16 evening along with mandatory documents. “This time we had asked the candidates belonging to the reserved category to produce their original caste certificates for verification before submitting the photo copy along with the other documents,” he said.
The total number of voters from all the nine constituencies is 1448 of which the highest number of voters would be from Raipur Rural, i.e. 195 while Balodabazar is in the bottom list with only 120 voters. The number of voters in other constituencies is - Dharsiva – 187, Raipur South – 172, Raipur North – 160, Arang – 159, Abhanpur – 155, Raipur East – 150 and Bhatapara – 150.
