Amid the release of controversial list of state Congress delegates that left several leaders mouth agape, about 30 young activists tried to blacken the face of Union Minister of State for Culture, Planning and Parliamentary Affairs and Chhattisgarh incharge V Narayanasamy prior to the party meeting at Congress Bhawan on Tuesday morning. Apprehending that the activists would attempt to assault the state incharge, the party workers quickly rescued him and beat the protestors who somehow managed to escape except four who were later handed over to the Kotwali police. Later, the police caught one more activist by evening.
These activists barged into the Congress Bhawan premises prior to the arrival of Narayanasamy and state CRO Viplove Thakur and were shouting slogans in favour of Sonia and Rahul Gandhi. As soon as the state incharge arrived and came out of his car, they hurled ink on him but the ink drops stained his kurta and face of DCC president Inderchand Dhariwal who was following him.
According to information, Narayanasamy had informed about the incident to Central Election Committee (CEC) chairman Oscar Fernandes immediately after the meeting. Fernandes has reported asked the state incharge to prepare a comprehensive report on the incident besides mentioning names of the suspected leaders who could be the real brains behind this deliberate act.
The Congress workers were heard whispering that protestors belonged to some specific camps of the party, but the senior leaders clarified that the activists were outsiders and were hired by somebody to spoil the meeting. A few workers doubted that some of the National Students Union of India (NSUI) members had sent these protestors on direction of one senior party leader, but the organisation’s state general secretary Ismail Ahmed denied the charges.
The protestors also distributed pamphlets in the Congress Bhawan that contained five points – sincere party workers were kept at bay during organisational election, only fake and rich party workers and those who have closer links with the BJP were appointed as poll officers during organisational poll, both CRO Viplove Thakur and state incharge V Narayanasamy had taken money from the BJP to spoil and drown the party, the people from specific caste were given opportunity in the list of delegates while the representatives of SC, ST and Muslims who are the party’s traditional vote bank were ignored and the dominance of traitors in the state unit have lowered the spirit of the workers and the party is fast losing its popularity in the state.
The five protestors who were caught are - Imran Ali, Durgesh, Pramod, Shiv Kumar Khunte and Mahendra Mithelkar and they are residents of Baanstal. The NSUI clarified that none of these five were part of the organisation.
Sonia to finalise PCC prez, working committee
Raipur, October 19, 2010
The state Congress unanimously passed three resolutions authorising AICC president Sonia Gandhi to finalise the names of AICC members, PCC president and working committee and to solve all the pending cases pertaining to organisational elections during the meeting of party delegates at Congress Bhawan on Tuesday. The senior leaders indicated that the AICC supremo would announce the final names within next 8-10 days.
The meeting that was convened by state incharge V Narayanasamy and CRO Viplove Thakur commenced about fifteen minutes late from its scheduled time of 10:30 am owing to disturbance created by about 30 activists who tried to blacken Narayanasamy’s face by hurling ink on him.
The meeting was attended by about 75-80 delegates while the party had given invitation to 139. A number of delegates reached party office after conclusion of the meeting.
In the meeting, the delegates first hailed Sonia Gandhi’s unopposed reelection as AICC chief for the fourth consecutive time. They hoped that the party would progress under her leadership and regain its strength in the state.
However, they agreed that the party’s popularity graph had plunged in the recent past owing to which it could not sustain its winning streak in the Bhatgaon by-election after clamping victory in Vaishalinagar. They felt that the party needed consolidation before Sanjari-Balod by-poll that is likely to be held in December 2010.
Some of the delegates also raised their objection over controversial remarks of former chief minister Ajit Jogi after Bhatgaon by-poll debacle. The party is already polarised and Jogi’s statement at this juncture would only deepen the rift between different camps, they said and added that stern disciplinary action should be taken against those who go against the party lines.
Narayanasamy said that the party had fielded US Singhdeo in Bhatgaon by-poll after evolving consensus over his name, but it faced defeat due to its own faults. He said the party workers should not feel discouraged in wake of Bhatgaon by-poll loss and must unite to win the Sanjari-Balod by-election. He urged senior leaders to avoid entangling into petty politics of blaming each other and must make efforts to strengthen the party.
Taking a dig at the BJP-led state government, Narayanasamy said the ruling party was misusing its power and had given the rights to exploit Chhattisgarh’s rich mineral resources spawning in over 50,000 acres land to the industrialists. He said corruption prevailed in every department of the state government and Congress can expose it only when its leaders would be united.
On controversial list of delegates, CRO Viplove Thakur clarified that she had prepared the list on the basis of reports submitted by all the BROs. She admitted that some names could not be included but urged from the workers to keep patience as some of the names are yet to be announced.
Notably, there are 219 delegates in the PCC of which 199 hail from different blocks, 16 seats belong to nominated legislators and five are represented by former PCC presidents who are ex-officio delegates that include Ramanujlal Yadav, Motilal Vora, Charandas Mahant, Parasram Bhardwaj (was the president of Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee) and Dhanendra Sahu.
The meeting was attended by PCC president Dhanendra Sahu, Leader of Opposition in state Assembly Ravindra Choubey, PCC working presidents Charandas Mahant and Satyanaraya Sharma, legislators Mohammad Akbar, Nandkumar Patel, Dr Renu Jogi, Dharmjeet Singh, Amitesh Shukla, PCC general secretary incharge Subhash Sharma were and other invited delegates.
