Economist PM failed in practical exams: Gadkari

Raipur, September 03, 2010

Lamenting Congress-led UPA at Centre for failing to curb rising inflation in the country, the BJP national president Nitin Gadkari says that the poor has become poorer and rich has become richer in the past 6 years. “Unfortunately, the great economist Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has failed in practical examinations,” Gadkari said while talking to the mediapersons during his maiden visit to the state capital at new circuit house on Friday evening.
Gadkari, who arrived Raipur about 90 minutes late from the scheduled time of 3 pm due  to party’s core group meeting in his residence at New Delhi, said, “The UPA’s wrong economic policies resulted in high inflation in the country.” Comparing rate of inflation during the tenures of Congress and non-Congress governments at Centre since independence, Gadkari said, “The price rice always shot up during Congress regime while the non-Congress governments succeeded in keeping the inflation rate below two percent.”
The BJP supremo further took a dig at Congress on its poverty eradication campaign launched back in 1947 and said, “Ironically, about 90 percent Indians earn less than $2 a day while the daily income of nearly 50 percent citizens is less that Rs 20. Still, the Congress makes tall claims by twisting the facts and the figures.”
Pointing towards the Supreme Court directive to the Centre pertaining to distribution of foodgrains gratis to the poor, Gadkari said the Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar did not follow clear instructions of the apex court and preferred to let the foodgrains rot because he intended to sell it to the liquor companies. “Contrarily, kudos to the Chhattisgarh government that took initiative and is distributing rice at Re 1 per kg to its poor citizens without any instruction from the SC,” he said.
When asked about his comments on Sonia Gandhi’s reelection as AICC president for the fourth time, Gadkari said, “The seat of Congress chief is reserved for Sonia Gandhi and her family members and no PM Manmohan Singh or P Chidambaram or any other Congress leader can dream to get elevated to such a post in his life ever. Contrarily, I am an ordinary worker in the BJP who started his political career from booth level and got opportunity to hold the key post of BJP president. This is only possible in BJP where performance is counted, not the family background.”

‘Terrorism cannot be linked to caste, colour & religion’

Raipur, September 03, 2010

When asked his views over Union Home Minister P Chidambaram’s ‘saffron terrorism’ remarks, the BJP national chief Nitin Gadkari said, “Crime is crime and terrorism is terrorism. You cannot link caste, colour and religion to terrorism. Saffron is a colour that is ubiquitous in rich Hindu culture and we strongly object Chidambaram’s comments.” He alleged that the Congress was even politicising the ‘terrorism factor’ and said, “For Congress, secularism is appeasement for terrorism. If not, then why the UPA government is delaying in hanging terrorist Afzal Guru?”
On naxalism, Gadkari said, “This is a socio-economic problem and must be solved jointly by the Centre and the state governments. About 230 districts from Tirupati to Pashupatinath are affected by the Maoists who want to come in power in an undemocratic manner without shunning violence which is intolerable.”
Asked the objective his visits to the BJP-ruled states, Gadkari said, “We are interested in audit for performance. We are actually measuring the works of the BJP-governed states and are making efforts to improve.”
When asked was he also gauging the performance of the BJP’s chief ministers, Gadkari said, “There is no question of gauging the performance of CMs as we have selected the performers and they are justifying it.”
