RMC must improve waste disposal mgmt: Shukla

Raipur, October 06, 2010

The dream of clean capital would only come true when the RMC would improve its waste disposal management system. The suggestions tot eh RMC were given by Commissioner Urban Administration Directorate Sanjay Shukla who inspected the city sanitation works along with Mayor Kiranmayi Nayak and civic Commissioner Om Prakash Choudhary on Wednesday.
Shukla said the filth and garbage should be lifted from all the wards on daily basis and dumped in the Sarona-based trenching ground. Nayak and Choudhary cautioned the sanitary contractors not to allow the cleaning workers to burn the garbage in the city as it pollutes the environment and the localities remain unclean.
The duo further asked the officials to slash payments of the contractors and the drivers of garbage collection vehicles if they would not dump the waste in the trenching ground and show fake figures. Notably, the civic administration has warned it would immediately cancel the agreements of the sanitary contractors who would pose lethargic attitude at work besides blacklisting them.
The trio felt that the nullahs that overflow during rains and cause submergence in the nearby areas should be cleaned properly. “In fact, the flood-prone regions in the capital should be marked and essential measures must be taken in advance so that the conditions in these areas may not aggravate during next rainy season,” the trio said.
Nayak and Choudhary asked the zone commissioners and zonal health officers to tour their regions everyday from 7 am to 10 am to ensure that the sanitary works are being done properly. He suggested the officials to interact with the residents during the morning hours pertaining to sanitation and redress their problems on the spot.
Nayak said the corporators should get cell phone numbers according to the serial number of their respective wards and made public so that the residents could contact them directly to redress their grievances.
Recently, Shukla gave 20-day ultimatum to the civic officials to improve the city sanitation and road management besides other basic provisions while he and Choudhary were jointly reviewing the arrangements in capital prior to Rajyotsav that will commence from October 26, 2010. The Collector Rohit Yadav too felt that the sanitary standards of the capital needed to be raised.
