Deepmala RSU’s first PhD student to receive Inspire scholarship

Raipur, December 14, 2010

The indefatigable approach of the talented students of Pt Ravishankar Shukla University (RSU) has once again imparted the varsity a new dimension as its student Deepmala Rai who is pursuing her PhD under Professor HK Pathak from School of Studies in Mathematics had won the scholarship programme of Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (Inspire) this year.
Rai will get Rs 15000-20000 per months for five years under the scholarship programme. “We are proud to have such brilliant lot in our varsity,” said jubilant Professor BK Sharma, HoD School of Studies in Mathematics while talking to Central Chronicle on Tuesday.
“Inspire is an innovative program sponsored and managed by the Department of Science & Technology for attraction of talent to science. Its basic objective is to communicate to the youth the excitements of creative pursuit of science, attract talent to the study of science at an early stage and thus build the required critical human resource pool for strengthening and expanding the science and technology system and R&D base,” Professor Sharma said.
“A striking feature of the program is that it does not believe in conducting competitive exams for identification of talent at any level and rather relies on the efficacy of the existing educational structure for identification of talent,” he added.
Rai will get the scholarship under Inspire’s Assured Opportunity for Research Careers (AORC) component.
“The AORC aims to attract, attach, retain and nourish talented young scientific human resource for strengthening the R&D foundation and base by offering doctoral Inspire fellowship in the age group 22-27 years, in the both basic and applied sciences (including engineering and medicine). It also aims to assure opportunities for post-doctoral researchers through a scheme through contractual and tenure track positions for five years in both basic and applied sciences areas through an Inspire faculty scheme,” informed Professor Sharma.
In fact, the Inspire has three components: Scheme for Early Attraction of Talent (SEATS), Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE) and Assured Opportunity for Research Careers (AORC).
On SEATS, he said, “It aims to attract talented youth to study science by providing Inspire award, to experience the joy of innovations, of Rs 5000 to ten lakh young learners in the age group 10-15 years. There shall be annual summer and winter camps for about 50,000 youth in more than 100 locations, for toppers in Class X board examinations for exposure with global leaders in science, through Inspire internship.
On SHE, Professor Sharma said, “The SHE aims to attract talented youth into undertaking higher education in science intensive programmes, by providing scholarships and mentoring through summer attachment to performing researchers. The scheme offers 10,000 scholarships every year @ Rs 80000 per year to talented youth in the age group 17-22 years, for undertaking Bachelor and Masters level education in natural and basic sciences. The main feature of the scheme is mentorship support being planned for every scholar through Inspire scholarship.”
He informed that the students are shortlisted from about 80000 students across the nation for scholarship under SHE component.

WLED to become household item from next decade

Remote tribal hamlets to get cheapest option in future

Raipur, December 14, 2010

By 2021, the CFL bulbs and other advanced lightening systems would be replaced by the white LED (light emitting diode) technology which is highly expensive at present. These WLEDs would be much cheaper and their life span would be about one lakh hour. To bring this sea change in the human life, about ten research and development teams in India alone are engaged in advance experiments day and night apart from several similar groups in the other parts of the globe.
The Secretary of Luminescence Society of India (LSI) and faculty from Sayajirao University of Baroda Gujarat Professor KVR Murthy informed that with the improvement of white LED technology, the use of LEDs for general illumination applications will become more prevalent in the domestic as well as commercial sectors.
“When light from all parts of the visible spectrum overlap one another, the additive mixture of colors appears white. However, the eye does not require a mixture of all the colors of the spectrum to perceive white light. Primary colors from the upper, middle, and lower parts of the spectrum (red, green, and blue), when combined, appear white,” he said.
“You can see the WLED bulbs in Audi cars running in your city. The specification of each WLED bulb in these cars is 2500 lumens per watt and cost above Rs 5000. All the scientists are aiming to bring down this cost through improved technology,” he added.
The tribal-populated states like Chhattisgarh can make optimum use of WLEDs by making such economical bulbs available to the impoverished section,” he said.
The applications of WLEDs can be in medical instrumentation, bar code readers, color & money sensors, encoders, optical switches, mobile phones, digital cameras, laptops, general backlighting, full color video, monochrome message boards, traffic, transportation passenger information, automobiles, rail, aviation, tower lights, runway lights,  architectural lighting, machine vision, retail displays, emergency lighting, neon replacement, bulb replacements, flashlights  and pathway & marker lights.
