I can remove unipoles for public security: Mayor

Raipur, February 02, 2010

Mayor Kiranmayi Nayak has said that the ten unipoles erected in different parts of the city can be removed if they would pose threat to public security. “I would not regret to cancel the contract of Rs 50 lakhs for unipoles to avoid any mishap in terms of lives,” she said. Nayak stated this while speaking to the media persons after taking a meeting of mayor-in-Council (MiC) members and senior officials of each department at Filter Plant on Tuesday.
However, Nayak said she would first implement the pattern adopted in Ahmedabad and Ghaziabad where stem of the unipoles have been cut short.
When indicated that the unipole erected at Shastri Chowk was illegal, she expressed her unawareness about it. “The tender for unipoles had been finalised during municipal’s last term and if there are any irregularity then I would certainly inquire,” she said.
She further informed that it was not an official MiC meeting but was just an interactive session with all the 14 members and officials. “I first wanted to know about the current status of works in every department and whether the MiC members had developed rapport with the officials of their respective department or not,” she said. “I have asked the MiC members to submit their individual written reports on pending, ongoing and fresh projects by February 8,” she added.
About revenue status, Nayak informed that the RMC had to recover Rs 27 crore while about Rs 34.39 crore is outstanding against it. “We are already lagging in terms of revenue collection as compared to previous term and are aiming to fill the gap by pressing more number of staff in those areas where collection usually remains high,” she said. The RMC has marked over 600 buildings in the city whose assessment and reassessment has been done for revenue generation. Nayak said the RMC would collect about two crore revenue from those edifices.
On framing of hoarding policy, Nayak said it would take time. “We want to implement too many policies but we are running short of at least 1000 staff,” she said.
Pointing out towards municipal’s health department that has only 19 health officers, Nayak asked, “Can you imagine how these handful of health officials are managing health-oriented assignments for city’s 70 wards?”
Nayak also informed that the RMC would soon commence a fire station at Gudhiyari. However, she failed to explain how she would manage two fire stations when already the particular department is already reeling under acute staff crunch. According to plan, the city should have four fire stations at its each corner.
On sanitation policy, Mayor Kiranmayi Nayak said she would soon streamline the sanitation staff. “The yearly sanitation budget is Rs 60 lakh, but this amount is not being used honestly for the actual purpose,” she said.
When indicated that the city’s garbage is not being dumped in the trenching ground at Sarona, but still the RMC has not taken any action against the responsible health officials, Nayak said, “I know who are making money at the cost of public health and I can expose the entire network of such people. However, once the new contract system comes into effect, I will have the control and I am sure no one will dare to deceive me at that time,” she said.
On RMC plans to tackle drinking water crisis during summer, she informed new pipelines were being laid and ferries of water tankers would be increased in those areas where water table dips sharply. She also informed that the movement of water tankers would be tracked to avoid practice of fake billing.
