Now, the owners of commercial complexes and the big edifices would not dare to misuse the parking space in the basement to make extra profit as such practices would be taken seriously by the civic body and it will immediately seal the particular building. The caution bell was rung by RMC Commissioner Om Prakash Choudhary during a forum that held at Town Hall on Tuesday to discuss on the methods to solve mounting traffic problems of the capital city. A large number of builders, owners of commercial complexes and marriage palaces and hoteliers were invited in the forum to give their significant inputs pertaining to traffic woes of Raipurians.
Choudhary said it was unfortunate that motorists violate the traffic norms and park their vehicles haphazardly on roads and public places in spite of provision of separate parking lots close to the busy markets of the city. He also expressed his annoyance over those commercial complex owners who give the basement of their buildings on rent to make additional bucks instead of providing parking space to the customers.
He said although the municipal had earlier launched a drive to seal the basements of those building which were being misused by the owners, but similar practices were rife once again in the city markets. “We cannot allow norm violators to disrupt the traffic and henceforth if any building would not provide parking space to the visitors or customers, the civic body will not hesitate in sealing the edifice,” he said.
The marriage palaces will also have to make separate parking arrangements if they do not have their own. Choudhary said all the marriage palaces would be under watchful eyes of the civic body and hefty fine would be imposed on them who would be found throwing the road traffic in haywire.
To ease out traffic, the municipal will build foot overbridges on some busy roads while 11 roads would be developed like Gaurav Path. The civic body will also constitute zonal teams to organise the road traffic.
In the forum, the Town Planner Sandeep Bagde informed that the RMC and Police Administration had jointly marked 100 spots for no parking zone and 50 for parking lots. No one will be allowed to park his or her vehicle on road.
ASP Lal Umed Singh urged the businessmen to help the police and civic administrations in making the city traffic smooth. DSP Traffic BR Hirwani said the Police Administration had been taking action against the motorists for parking their vehicles on prohibited zones and it not tolerate any recklessness and norm violation in future too.

How to prevent waterborne diseases in rainy season
Raipur, July 06, 2010
Monsoon season is on and so are the fun, excitement, greenery and cool climate. But you must be cautious in your eating habits and take fresh food only. Any negligence in eating might spoil your mood. If you are consuming stale food or contaminated water this season you may fall pray to infectious and water borne diseases.
Health experts say cases of vector and water borne diseases are usually on rise during rainy season.
However, it is not so difficult to deal with such illnesses that are associated with the monsoon season. So people must know all such problems so as to take necessary preventive measures during this season. Those having small kids need to be extra-careful during this season in prevention of such disorder. Fluctuation in temperature often leads to some common illnesses like cold and flu particularly in students and working people
in this season.
When it rains you rush for a shelter to protect yourself from getting soaked. By doing this you may have saved yourself from being drenched in rainwater but it may make you susceptible to any kind of infection particularly if you have weak immune system.
Dr Aradhana Sharma, MD, says chances of outbreak of hepatitis A and E, and various other diseases like typhoid, cholera and leptospirosis are usually high after one or two spells of monsoon rains. Viral fever & malaria cases also come up during this season.
According to her, people must make sure that stagnant water is not accumulated in the surroundings. She recommended consumption of boiled or filtered water to prevent all such diseases.
“Rainy season also weakens digestive system of human body and that in order to prevent outbreak of diseases it is essential to eat light food. It is also essential to avoid non-vegetarian food should be avoided although there is no harm in eating tandoori foods in small quantity”, she said.
According to Physician Dr Harindra Mohan Shukla mosquitoes, flies and rats are common factors behind outbreak of some fever-related diseases. So, it was necessary for one to keep his surroundings dry and clean, he said, adding that people should wash vegetables with the use of clean water before steaming, in order to kill germs.
According to him one should keep oneself hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
“If you are walk in dirty or muddy water during rainy season your toes and nails may be affected by fungal infections”, he said.
Nirmal Shah, a sales manager in a private insurance company, said, "I had fallen ill twice ever since I was drenched in pre-monsoon showers. Now I am sick of cough and cold which made it difficult for me to come out of my home”.
According to doctors it is necessary to consume cereals, vegetables and fruits and avoid oily, fried and spicy food. People must avoid food items which are sold open in streets. People must eat evergreen leafy vegetables which are easily digestible. Consumption of such vegetables helps strengthen immunity, said the doctors.
Nonetheless, most vegetables and fruits carry a risk of infection during monsoon and hence they should be washed properly before use. Gastro-intestinal problems are common during the moist months. One should therefore not eat cut fruits.
Bitter and astringent vegetables and cooling foods such as barley, brown rice and oats are the stomach’s best friends during the monsoon. In addition, plenty of ginger and onion should be used in food preparations as they help in exterminating the microbes in the stomach. Avoiding gaseous foods like soyabean, pulses like kidney beans and channa and other heavy food items is a wise thing to do in the rainy season.
While a meagre amount of turmeric everyday can keep the infections at bay, honey is an excellent tonic that helps in keeping the intestine sterile. Honey also assists in the digestion process to carry out its functions properly and effectively.
Similarly fruits that have high quantity of water such as watermelon should also be avoided. Dairy products should not be consumed in huge amounts as they have maximum propensity to get infected by germs. Since monsoon is mostly about water-borne diseases, water should be purified during the season. The season is the perfect environment for the breeding of bacteria and thus one should avoid eating junk and other spicy food from street vendors.
Eating salads from outside is also not a good option as germs might thrive in them during rains thus giving rise to various infections like diarrhoea. “During the monsoon, a person is more susceptible to diseases such as cholera, dysentery, acidity, food poisoning and many others. Therefore extra caution should be taken when it comes to water,” says Dr Harindra Mohan Shukla.
Along with the diet tips, it becomes equally important to take care of the personal hygiene. To begin with, a healthy habit would be to wash one’s hands before eating. A regular shower everyday keeps the body free from germs and bacteria that may cause some skin problems.
Also, dry the feet when they are wet to avoid fungal infections. A damp room is an invitation to ruin the monsoon mania. And diseases such as malaria and dengue can be easily avoided if the water is not allowed to stagnate near or in the house. So while you plan to enjoy the heavenly downpours, relieve your mind of all the worries as you take these precautions.
Common waterborne diseases caused by bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms which are transmitted from one person to other through contaminated water are -
Hepatitis A, Hepatitis E
Poliomyelitis
Typhoid, paratyphoid

Vegetables and fruits should be thoroughly washed in clean running water before consumption.
How to make water safe for drinking
During monsoon period it is advisable to take the following additional precautions to purify drinking water -
Boiling - boiling for 20 mts will destroy all the germs.
Filtration: Ceramic filters, RO systems, Aqua guard etc are filtration systems which purify and provide safe drinking water. In case no other means available, you can add a tab of chlorine in 20 litres of water and leave for 30 minutes.
Following precautions should be taken while eating out
Uncooked foods like cut fruits, salads, curds or any other preparation which has water/ice added to it such as lassi, curd and raita should be avoided .

What to do if start loose motions/ vomiting?
Take plenty of oral fluids like water, coconut water, juices, dal, lemon water etc.
Take ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution). It contains sugar & important electrolytes and is used to treat dehydration. To prepare ORS, mix one entire sachet of ORS in one liter of boiled &cooled water. You can make ORS at home also by adding one fistful of sugar, add three pinches of salt and one pinch of baking soda in one liter of water.
Consult your doctor if symptoms persist
To prevent dengue and malaria
Do not allow water to collect near your house in drains etc. Water should not be allowed to collect in spare tyres, buckets, pots etc usually found lying on the rooftops of offices and houses.
Overhead water tanks should be properly covered; water used in water coolers should be changed every 4-5 days. Before refilling, tank must be cleaned properly.
Periodic spraying of insecticides or larvicide should be undertaken in flats, houses and in stagnant water collections by societies and Resident Welfare Associations (RWA).
Use wire mesh on windows and doors to prevent entry of mosquitoes inside the house.
Use mosquito repellent cream. Similarly, coils, mats etc are also helpful in warding off mosquitoes.
Use of full sleeves clothing is helpful as it reduces the area of exposure to the mosquito.
In case of fever with chills consult your doctor immediately.
