Wants govt to step down for failing to contain naxalism
Demands President’s rule in state
Raipur, April 07, 2010
The Congress has called Chhattisgarh bandh on Thursday in the aftermath of the biggest-ever bloodbath in the state that took place in Dantewada district on Tuesday in which the naxalites killed 76 CRPF jawans. “We have called state bandh in respect of our martyred jawans,” said PCC president Dhanendra Sahu and while talking to the media persons at Congress Bhawan on Wednesday. Sahu was accompanied by the Leader of the Opposition in state Assembly Ravindra Choubey, AICC secretary and state in-charge Mirza Irshad Baig. The Chhattisgarh Chamber of Commerce and Industries have also supported the bandh.
The trio held the state government responsible for the naxal attack and felt that the government should step down on moral grounds. They also demanded President’s rule in the state pointing that the naxal violence in the state had increased to manifolds in the past six years. They severely criticised the government for staking the lives of jawans and said proper action-plan should have been made before sending jawans.
The trio expressed surprised that the Chief Minister Raman Singh reached Dantewada after 24 hours of the incident. “Ironically, the CM had time to attend different functions along with the dinner party organised for the Gujarat government’s delegation on Tuesday but he did not felt it important to reach Dantewada immediately after knowing about the incident to extend his moral support to the jawans,” Choubey said.
The trio also questioned the role of Home Minister Nankiram Kanwar and DGP Vishwaranjan and indicated that Kanwar looked handcuffed because neither the DGP nor the IPS officials follow his instructions. “Kanwar had said that he would resign if the naxal problem would not be solved in one year, but on the contrary, the extremists have expanded their domain,” Choubey said.
When asked whether military operation needed to uproot naxalism from the state, Choubey said it could be one of the options but the state government should take initiative for it.

Staff crunch causes postal delay in Raipur division
Raipur, April 07, 2010
The post offices in the Raipur division are facing acute shortage of staff including postmen owing to which the letters, parcels and other types of posts do not reach to the people timely.
According to information provided by the officials of Head Post Office (HPO), there are only 466 postmen in the Chhattisgarh circle of which 102 are working in Raipur division. Surprisingly, 75 postmen are working in the capital while only 27 are catering the remaining part of the Raipur division that includes Dhamtari, Bhatapara, Balodabazar, Mahasamund and Saraipali.
The officials informed that the sanctioned posts for postmen in Raipur division was 165 while for the entire state was 630, but the vacant posts could not be filled owing to tedious recruitment process and due to indifferent attitude of the top authorities.
The distribution officer in the HPO said the posts were usually delivered late either owing to incomplete address or due to wrong address or name of the recipient. He informed that about thousands of letters, parcels and other posts arrive at HPO everyday and the existing distribution staff takes at least a day or two in separating the posts according to locations.
When pointed out that many people complain about missing posts which either contain important documents or demand drafts or cheques, he said such things should be sent through insured posts so that in case of misplacement, the particular person could claim compensation from the post office.
Tatibandh post office errs in paying interest
Raipur, April 07, 2010
A saving account holder in the Tatibandh post office has complained that the interest amount updated in his passbook in the end of financial year was much below the actual figures. Surprisingly, when victim pointed out towards the error and sought correction in the passbook, the post master refused to accept his fault and said the interest amount was correctly filled, but since the customers fail to understand the complicated process of interest calculation, they usually raise their doubts on it. When the victim requested the post master to explain him about the method to calculate the interest, the latter resisted and advised him to go to the Head Post Office (HPO) to get answers of all his queries.
The victim Y Sharma (name changed) on Wednesday contacted the Accounts Officer GR Nishad at HPO and informed him about the erroneous interest paying process at Tatibandh post office. Nishad said such issues were dealt by Ganj post office. However, when he calculated the interest amount to ensure whether Sharma’s complaint was fair or not, he remained mouth agape on finding that the Tatibandh post master had committed big mistake and had given less interest.
Nishad said he could not believe because the interests were being calculated by the computer. But he was shattered to learn from Sharma that the Tatibandh post master had manually calculated the interest. Sharma also doubts that the interest given to him in the previous fiscals were also less.
He also complained that in spite of his frequent requests, the Tatibandh post master had not entered the interest amount for 2004-05 in his passbook. “The post master says that the documents of 2004-05 had been sent to the HPO and hence he could not fill interest amount in the absence of detailed information. But the HPO staff says that the interest will be filled by Tatibandh post master and pertaining to this issue, I am running from pillar to post for the past two years,” Sharma said.
Sharma expressed his concern to Nishad that if such mistakes were prevalent in the post offices then their saving account holders, especially villagers and pensioners, would be incurring major loss as they deposit their hard-earned money in post office with hope to get better interest rate.
