82 BCA students get zero in maths paper

University’s valuation system comes under clouds

NSUI creates scene at RSU, demands correction in result

Raipur,June 28, 2010

Pt Ravishankar Shukla University (RSU) has once again been entangled in a controversy for a major blunder in results of BCA final year (Bachelor of Computer application) that shattered hopes of more than 82 students of the discipline who received zero mark in the mathematics paper.
Ironically, a number of these zero scorers had secured high marks in their previous semesters. Irked by RSU’s recklessness, the students along with members of National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) demonstrated at the varsity campus and submitted a written complain to the Vice-Chancellor SK Pandey demanding prompt investigation into the matter and quick correction of their mark-sheets.
Pandey immediately issued directives to the Department Head Mathematics to recheck the results and assured the students that corrected result would soon be announced. The NSUI members alleged that in spite of being aware about the blunder Pandey had termed it an administrative error.
Earlier, the students along with NSUI members reached the RSU campus at about 11 am, but the security staff did not allow them to meet Pandey for three hours. At 2 pm, the NSUI state president Sanjeev Shukla reached varsity along with other members and tried to contact Pandey over phone. However, when they did not get positive response from Pandey, the students and NSUI members started sloganeering against the RSU administration. Finally, Pandey agreed to meet the students after an hour and assured them to take prompt action on their complaint.
The students were amazed with the zero mark in the maths subject and informed Pandey that a majority of them had either topped or had earned distinction in their previous semesters. Some of zero scorers have even obtained top ranks in the MCA, MBA and CPM entrance Examinations.
The demonstrating students were from different colleges of the capital – 22 from RSU, 17 from Harishankar Memorial College, 15 from Disha College, seven from Vipra College, 12 from Pragati College and nine from Agrasen college.

How could irregularities occur?
Mathematics stream of BCA final comprises three subjects including Calculus and Geometry, Differential Equation and Computer System Architecture, each carrying 50 marks. Since there was no step marking, students received zero marks. Many students have also obtained low marks in Multimedia. As this subject was included in January, classes could be run for only three months and that too with shortage of concerned subject teachers. Students said that books for this subject became available only in February.

Teachers shortage, low attendance of students also the factors
Head of Department (HoD) of Computer Science in the university has ascribed the poor result to shortage of skilled and qualified teachers. According to HoD most of the colleges are facing shortage of Mathematics teachers although the university had made statute-28 compulsory to overcome this problem. Low attendance
According to the HoD, computer science students do not usually focus on mathematics.
