Clean drains, nullahs before rains: PWD Minister

Raises concerns over waterlogging problems at Gudhiyari under-bridge

Raipur, May 28, 2010

PWD Minister Brijmohan Agrawal is concerned about frequent waterlogging problems in the city, especially at Gudhiyari under-bridge during rains. He has asked the officials to make adequate arrangements before monsoon to ensure that the waterlogging problems may not occur and the road traffic remains smooth. He said all the drains and nullahs should be properly cleaned so that the bastis and low lying areas may submerge during rains.
Agrawal issued these significant instructions to the officials during a meeting on sanitation works and waterlogging problems held at Mantralaya on Friday evening.
Agrawal said the drains and nullahs within one kilometer range of the Gudhiyari under-bridge should be thoroughly cleaned so that they may not overflow and cause waterlogging during heavy showers.
He said prior arrangement of powerful suction pump would ensure that water could quickly be removed in case of waterlogging at under-bridge. He further suggested that water accumulation could also be prevented in the area if the direction of water flowing during rains would be turned to other drains and nullahs.
He asked the officials to conduct spot inspection of the under-bridge as well as the flood-prone areas and to frame future course of action accordingly before June 5, 2010.
Learning that Santoshi Nagar and its nearby bastis get severely affected in rainy season due to waterlogging, Agrawal said the comprehensive plan to prevent flood-like situation in the capital should specially consider Santoshi Nagar.
Considering several complaints about waterlogging problems in Ring Road No 1 where the project of four-lane road has not yet completed, Agrawal said proper measures should be taken so that the residential located on either sides of the road may not inundate. Notably, the road has also become accident-prone owing to big potholes and the people had repeatedly reminded the civic authorities as well as the state government to instruct the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to take certain steps that could prevent any mishap.
