RMC removes 12-yr-old encroachments

From embankment of Handi Talab

To launch drive to free all ponds from illegal occupants

Raipur, May 27, 2010

The RMC demolished 12-year-old encroachments from the embankment of Handi Talab on Thursday. The municipal Commissioner Om Prakash Choudhary informed that twenty kuchcha and pucca houses were demolished from the embankment of the pond with the help of 3D machine. “These encroachments were major hurdle in the beautification works of the Handi Talab,” Choudhary said.
He informed that the RMC had served notices to all the 20 illegal occupants two days back to voluntarily vacate the land within 24 hours, but it had to demolish the houses in the presence of adequate police personnel when they ignored the instructions.
Choudhary said the municipal would soon launch a campaign to free the embankments of all the ponds of the city from illegal occupants. “Our prime aim is to preserve the ponds for which the encroachers needed to be removed. Later, we will beautify the ponds and commence the water conservation and preservation works,” he said.
Notably, the Urban Administration and Development Minister Rajesh Munat had recently expressed his concerns over the conditions of the ponds. Considering the ponds in the capital on verge of extinction, Munat had appealed to the people to conserve them and avoid throwing garbage in them. He had also instructed the officials to remove encroachments from the embankments of all the ponds. The minister had further said that the government can provide funds for beautification and preservation of ponds, but the local residents should take equal responsibility in saving them.

Do not throw garbage in drains, nullahs: Mayor

Raipur, May 27, 2010

Mayor Kiranmayi Nayak has reiterated that people should stop throwing garbage specially polythene waste in drains and nullahs. She said dream of making the capital clean and green would only be possible when people would extend their help to the RMC. Nayak sought people’s help on cleanliness after she inspected nullah cleaning works being carried out by the municipal’s Health department in Tatya Para and Ramsagar Para wards on Thursday.
The RMC has engaged special sanitation gang to clean the nullah from Mangalam hotel to Telghani Naka chowk via Agrasen chowk and in Bajrang Nagar (Samta Colony). During inspecting the cleaning works in these areas, Nayak was surprised by learning that the sanitation gangs took out about ten truck polythene waste from the nullahs. She said if the people would continue throwing polythene waste in drains and nullahs then it would really be impossible for the RMC to maintain cleanliness. “Polythene is also harmful for our environment and people should avoid using it,” she said.
She further appealed to all the corporators to create awareness among the residents of their respective wards about the significance of sanitation and hygienic conditions in and around their ambience. “The sanitary workers are taking out huge amount of garbage, especially polythene and plastics from the drains and nullahs from across the city. This indicates that people do not use the litter bins of their locality,” she said.
Nayak said the RMC commenced nullah cleaning campaign about three weeks ago and had taken out over 2000 truck garbage by far. ‘We are using poclain and 3D machines to clean the nullahs up to bottom so that the people residing near bastis could not face inconvenience during rains,” she said.
Nayak said the municipal would not brook any pretext over cleanliness issue and would take stern action against those officials and contractors who would fail to maintain sanitation standards.
She directed all the zonal officials to regularly monitory the sanitation works in their respective areas. “I am inspecting nullah cleaning works in different wards everyday and wish that the corporators and officials, too, should keep an eye on sanitary workers,” she said.

Starts new filling point at Amasivni

Orders departmental enquiry into distribution of illegal tap connection issue

Raipur, May 27, 2010

Finally, RMC Commissioner Om Prakash has Choudhary has fulfilled the demand of Congress Corporator from Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar ward Anwar Hussein and has started a new filling point at Amasivni.
Hussein said it would be too early to say that the filling point would solve the problem of acute water crisis in his ward. “Let us see whether the situation changes in next few days or remains the same,” he said. However, he hoped that the commencement of the new filling point in the area would be an added water source along with existing Mova water tank.
Choudhary has also ordered departmental enquiry into the distribution of illegal tap connections in which Speaker Sanjay Shrivastava’s brother Vinay has been allegedly involved. Hussein had demanded from Choudhary to lodge FIR against Vinay on May 26, 2010. The probe will be conducted by Zone-2 Commissioner Santosh Pandey. “Choudhary informed me that it would at least take a couple of days to go through the old records before nailing Vinay,” Hussein said adding that he would wait till that time and would not exert pressure on municipal through dharna or agitation.
Notably, Hussein had gheraoed Choudhary’s office on May 26, 2010 and had given him 24-hour ultimatum to take action against Vinay and to solve water problem in his area.
The filling point in Amasivni started on Thursday at about 4 pm. The officials of Water Works department were also present on the spot.
When asked what would happen to the 20 residents of VV Vihar Colony who had obtained illegal tap connections at the rate of Rs 10,000 from Vinay Shrivastava, Hussein said he had requested from Choudhary to regularise all the connections and to recover entire the bribe money from guilty person. However, he said the residents would have to pay fine during regularising their illegal tap connections.
Asked what measures had Choudhary taken to prevent people in using their influence and cutting the water supply of the area by closing the valve of Mova water tank, Hussein informed that the a new pump man has been appointed who had been entrusted the responsibility to ensure no one could meddle during supply process.
Earlier, Hussein had alleged that Speaker Sanjay Shrivastava was playing politics on water and was frequently misusing his powers by pressurising the zonal officials to close the valve of Mova water tank that caters huge population of the area including Daldal Sivni and Saddu.
