RMC staff demand arrest of corporator, 25 others
For vandalising municipal properties at Nalghar office
Wear black band as a mark of protest
Raipur, June 11, 2010
The RMC employees have demanded to arrest the Ramsagar Para ward corporator Ritesh Tripathi and 25 other residents for vandalizing the RMC office properties at Nalghar office on June 7, 2010. They also wore black bands as a mark of protest on Friday. The Nagar Nigam Karmachari Mahasangh (NNKM) has cautioned that the municipal employees would go on indefinite strike if their guilty persons would not be arrested.
Notably, Tripathi and the residents of Ramsagar Para had vandalised the municipal properties including furniture, fans and window glasses at its office at Nalghar holding the relevant officials responsible for not solving the problem of water crisis in their area. They also had heated exchanges with Executive Engineer of Water Works department KK Singh and other staff.
After the incident, the RMC administration had lodged written complaint against Tripathi and 25 others with the Kotwali police that they not only destroyed municipal properties but also harassed the staff on duty and created obstruction in government work.
However, in spite of the registering crime against the corporators and the residents under Section 353, 294, 506, 427 of IPC and Section 3 of Defacement of Property Act, the police have not arrested them so far, said the RMC staff.
The NNKM has already given a letter to the Mayor, Speaker and the Commissioner demanding quick action against the guilty persons and mentioning that the incident happened on the Tripathi’s directions.
The NNKM president Harendra Sahu and general secretary Surendra Dubey were surprised that when the municipal Commissioner had forwarded their letter to SP Amit Kumar then why police were delaying to arrest Tripathi and others.
They said the employees would continue to wear black band on June 14 and 15 if their demand would not be fulfilled. On June 16, the NNKM has called upon a meeting of the employees at 5.30 pm during which they would formulate the future strategy.
RMC razes out 200 shops, houses in Santoshi Nagar
Raipur, June 11, 2010
The RMC demolition squad on Friday razed out about 200 shops and houses at Santoshi Nagar for road widening process. The RMC demolished all the establishments in presence of security personnel to avoid any resistance from the local residents.
However, the shopkeepers have strongly objected the demolition works terming it breech of promise by PWD Minister Brijmohan Agrawal who had recently assured them that the slight amendment would be done in the project and the road would be widened 45 feet instead of 50 feet considering chances of heavy loss of the local shopkeepers and residents having their establishments on either sides of the road.
Notably, residents of Santoshi Nagar led by their corporator Amit Das had gheraoed the RMC office recently in protest of the municipal’s demolition works for road widening works.
The residents said the demolition would affect about 80 shopkeepers of the area, but the RMC had neither fixed any compensation package for them nor had planned to rehabilitate them elsewhere.
In this regard, Mayor Kiranmayi Nayak and municipal Speaker Sanjay Shrivastava had assured them that the project would be carried out only after their consent. The shopkeepers and the corporator had also met the PWD Minister who said the width of the road would be narrowed by five feet for their benefit. The shopkeepers agreed on this proposal and some even started demolishing those parts of their shops which were coming under project’s limits. However, the shopkeepers got surprised when the RMC suddenly started demolishing their establishments on Friday without prior intimation. They were also infuriated because the municipal even ignored the consensus they had evolved with the PWD Minister.
BJP protest meager hike in paddy MSP
Raipur, June 11, 2010
The BJP has outrightly rejected the meager hike of Rs 50/ per quintal in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of Paddy as announced by the Union government by describing it a cruel joke with the already beleaguered farming community. The BJP’s state president Ramsewak Paikra said the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government had completely ignored the benefits of farmers and its decision was an apparent indicator that it is anti-farmer. Notably, the MSP of Paddy has been fixed at Rs 1000 per quintal and of Paddy (grade A) at Rs 1030 per quintal.
Paikra said the BJP had been continuously demanding from the Centre to hike paddy MSP that could provide financial help to the farmers, but the UPA government had always neglected the problems of the farmers and was deceiving them for the past six years.
Paikra further pointed out that the Centre’s decision was more shocking in view of the prevailing conditions, when the farmers were fighting with skyrocketing agri-input costs and severe shortage of labour. He said the small hike in MSP would badly affect the farmers.
The state general secretary of Bharatiya Kisan Morcha (BKM) Sandeep Sharma said that the announcements of new MSP of paddy and other Kharif crops had unleashed the anti-farmer face of Congress as well as the Union government.
Sharma said the small bounty to the farmers had once again proved Centre’s affinity towards foreigners and foreign countries. He said earlier the Union government posed soft face towards Quattrocchis, Headleys and Andersons and then it revealed its interest on imported food grains. He said the UPA government was treating the farmers like beggars by merely increasing paddy MSP by five percent. He termed the Centre’s decision as perfidy because the paddy MSP it announced was much less than the one that was recommended by the Commission for Agriculture Costs and Prices.
Pointing towards the inordinate cost of urea and mixed fertilisers including minimum labour cost, expensive farm equipment and uncontrollably rising price indices, the Union government should had increased the MSP of grade A paddy to Rs 1400 per quintal.
