Young scientists must play key role in development: Guv

8th Chhattisgarh Young Scientist Congress concludes

Raipur, April 10, 2010

Young scientists should play pivotal role in the development of the state, but they should adhere to ethics and carry out research works to benefit the society. The words were expressed by Governor Shekhar Dutt after he distributed awards to 15 young scientists from different fields during the concluding ceremony of two-day 8th Chhattisgarh Young Scientist Congress (CYSC) that held at Pt Ravishankar Shukla University’s (RSU) auditorium on Saturday.
Dutt said science affects the life of a common man and it was closely linked with the needs and expectations of the society. The objective of CYSC is to identify the emerging scientists and to encourage their research projects, he said.
He felt that the younger generation should also carry out research works in the subjects like security, environmental affects, health and clean water.
He further said that fund and institution were not enough to do research but the scholar equally require motivation. “Hence, to achieve excellence in science sector, academic institutions should have good governance,” he said.
Padma Shri awarded Dr SS Yadav, who is also the Chairman of Mirpur Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS), Rewari (Haryana), said that the young scientists should do research works on need basis. “About 73 percent of the country’s population dwells in rural pockets and they could only be benefited when we will do research works based on our day-to-day requisites like nutrition, sanitation, environment, etc,” he said.
He said the researchers could benefit the masses, especially poor, only by cutting the cost of expensive technologies. Yadav further said that the research should be the language of the scientist. “The scientific research is a combination of science and wisdom and one should also have definite aim without which the project will be directionless,” he said.
Yadav cautioned the youths not to get tempted with the instant fame by publishing their journals in the newspapers. “You should first try to get your research papers published in the reputed journals so that your works could be analysed by the experts across the world. If your work will be worthy, then you should remain assured that the media itself would approach you to publish your papers,” he said.
The Director General of Chhattisgarh Council of Science and Technology (CCOST) Prof MM Hambarde said that science-based researches should have democratic qualities to fulfill the demands of common mass.
The varsity’s Vice-Chancellor SK Pandey termed research as life time process and said the researchers should not feel satisfied after receiving PhDs, but must continue exploring new dimensions on their selected subjects.
The 15 award winners who received Rs 11,000 cash and citations from the Governor were Dr Maruti Sahu, Babita Pandey, Rama Thakur, Shubhra Tiwari, Jyotirmayi Pradhan, Piyush Thakur, G Balakrishna, Bikesh Kumar singh, Nitin Jaiswal, Anita Gupta,  Pawan Kumar Patnaik, Shilpi Prasad and Amber Vyas (who were declared joint winners), Dinesh Kumar Sahu and Neha Jain.
