The RMC’s demolition squad demolished 14 illegal shops and three godowns constructed in about 20,195 sq ft area at Telghani Naka chowk on Tuesday. Traffic during the demolition process came to a virtual halt and motorists had to face inconvenience during the entire day. The RMC Commissioner Om Prakash Choudhary was present on the spot when the shops were being demolished through 3D machine while other municipal officials included Deputy Commissioner GS Kshatriya (Revenue), Town Planner Sandeep Bagde, Zone Commissioners and sufficient number of police personnel to avoid any untoward occurrence.
According to information, the municipal had given about the land on lease to one Badri Narayan Gowardhan Das company at the rate of Rs 2.27 per sq ft per month on April 1, 1991 for ten years. However, the RMC revoked the lease deed just in six months. The company challenged the RMC’s decision by filing a petition against it on July 25, 1992, but the High Court dismissed it on March 31, 2010.
On April 28, 2010, the municipal served a notice to the company to vacate the land in seven days, but when the latter refused to obey the HC orders, the RMC’s demolition squad razed out the encroachment on Tuesday.
The demolition process consumed ample time as the affected shopkeepers and godown owners had requested from Mayor Kiranmayi Nayak, who also reached the spot to take stock of the situation, to first allow them to safely remove the items they had stocked engaging 3D machine.
RMC to make rainwater harvesting mandatory
Raipur, May 04, 2010
The RMC has decided to make rainwater harvesting mandatory in the capital. The decision was taken after Mayor Kiranmayi Nayak called upon a joint meeting of Speaker Sanjay Shrivastava, leader of BJP corporators Subhash Tiwari, rainwater harvesting consultant registered with the municipal Vipin Dubey, RMC’s top officials and three MiC members. Rainwater harvesting will be compulsory for both new buildings as well as the existing ones, said Nayak.
Raising their concern over dipping groundwater table in the city, everyone in the meeting felt that rainwater harvesting would be the most effective way to conserve water. It was also decided in the meeting that the RMC would first launch a ten-day public awareness campaign in this regard in each ward from May 10, 2010. The drive will be carried out jointly by the RMC and Chhattisgarh Rainwater Harvesting Association (CRHA) that will provide eight raths.
The drive will comprise survey of houses that will be conducted by the hydrologists who would prepare list of houses that do not have rainwater harvesting facility. The hydrologists will hand the lists to the Zone Commissioners who in turn would take action against such house.
The RMC and CRHA will also inspire people about rainwater harvesting through its stall at the Rashtriya Vyapar Mela that will commence in the capital’s Science College ground from May 6, 2010.
The president of Town Planning department Jaggu Singh Thakur cautioned all the new edifices to adopt rainwater harvesting technique to conserve water as per the RMC guidelines to avoid any punitive against them including fine.
RMC to monitor sanitary works in each ward
Raipur, May 04, 2010
With the commencement of new sanitation contract in the capital from May 1, 2010, the RMC administration has decided to monitor cleanliness works in each ward by conducting spot. The municipal Commissioner Om Prakash Choudhary has directed the Health Officer to visit at least three wards on daily basis and to ensure that the sanitary contractors of those areas were not deceiving the municipal by completing the works simply on papers.
Notably, the Congress and independent corporators had gheraoed Choudhary on April 29, 2010 alleging that he was biased and was deliberately ignoring the problems of the wards. The corporators said the development works in their areas had come to a virtual halt owing to Choudhary’s negligent attitude. The corporators also alleged that neither Choudhary nor his subordinates conduct inspection of wards to see the problems, especially water crisis and insanitation. They said Choudhary should visit each ward to see the ground reality.
Prompted by the corporators’ emphasis on regular inspection of wards Choudhary issued directives to the Health department by asking it to keep an eye on the performance of the sanitary contractors. The reports of the Health Officer on sanitary works in each ward would be referred while releasing monthly payments of the contracting agencies.
Although, in coming months, the RMC will adopt biometric attendance system through which it would easily single out the truant sanitation staff, but till this technology is implemented, The RMC sources informed that Choudhary do not want to entangle in any controversy, especially on payment issue, which usually surfaces when the contractors claim full payment without carrying out assigned works to them and manage to betray the administration with the support of corrupt officials.
The Health Officer will also keep a record whether the sanitary workers follow the dress code or not. Similarly, the RMC administration has cautioned the garbage collection drivers to dump the litter only in the trenching ground at Sarona and nowhere else to avoid punitive action against them.
