Chief Minister Raman Singh has reiterated that he was always ready to debate with AICC general secretary and ex-CM of Madhya Pradesh Digvijay Singh over the naxal issue. “Digvijay is a confused person which is evident from his statements that contradicts with the ones given by his own party members. Still, I am ready for the debate,” said Raman while talking to the media persons at Mana airport on Sunday after returning from Gujarat where he had been to attend the inaugural ceremony of the state’s golden jubilee celebrations.
Notably, offended by Raman’s allegations against him that the naxalism flourished during his tenure, Digvijay on Saturday wrote that he had never expected that the Chhattisgarh CM would use such language and words. Digvijay said although he did not need to prove anybody about the development works he had done during his tenure, but he would certainly like to debate with Raman over the naxal issue.
When asked what would be his answers to Digvijay’s ten questions, Raman said, “I will surely reply to each of his questions and this time I will send him the answers through a letter because he too had adopted the same mode.” Earlier Digvijay had used newspapers as medium to write against Raman on which the latter too had written an article via newspapers holding the then Congress government of undivided Madhya Pradesh for failing to contain naxals.
Raman further said that the allegations leveled by Digvijay against the BJP Parliamentarian from Bastar Baliram Kashyap or the party leader Darbar Singh were baseless. “Digvijay is completely confused and cannot stick to his words. He has not even spared his own party’s Union Home Minister P Chidambaram against whom he had given controversial statements, but just in a week’s time he apologised,” Raman said.
Raman also ridiculed Digvijay’s demands to stop lending support to salva judum campaign when some of the Congress leaders too favour it.
Asked that Digvijay want comparisons of death tolls during Congress and BJP tenures, Raman said, “The figures would certainly be low if the government would surrender to the naxals. On the other hand, we have not given respite to the Maoists and are taking action against them continuously due to which death tolls would definitely be more.” He said the then Congress government had neither a concrete plan nor intention to uproot naxal problem.
On query about the allegations pertaining to bullets of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) reaching to naxals, Raman said he had not received any such report from the Central agencies.
On Saturday, Digvijay had written in his letter that he became CM of undivided Madhya Pradesh only because of the people’s mandate in Chhattisgarh region during his two consecutive terms. He pointed out that even Raman failed to win from his home constituency during 1998 Assembly elections, but the Congress continued its winning streak.
Digvijay also said that the development could have played vital role in combating naxals, but the BJP government was apathetic in implementing that X-factor in naxal-hit areas.
Cong to launch signature campaign in every ward
To protest against hiked consolidated taxes & to demand its revocation
Raipur, May 02, 2010
The Congress will launch a massive signature campaign in capital’s each ward to protest against the hike in consolidated taxes and to demand from the government to revoke it with an immediate effect. A decision in this regard was taken by the party during a meeting called upon by the PCC president Dhanendra Sahu at Congress Bhawan on Sunday. The meeting attended by PCC working president Satyanaran Sharma and other senior party leaders along with Mayor Kiranmayi Nayak and all the Mayor-in-Council (MiC) members.
In the meeting, Nayak once again clarified that the RMC had not hiked the consolidated taxes including property tax, but the decision was imposed by the state government on all the civic bodies in spite of their reluctance.
The MiC members informed that there was no proposal regarding hike in property tax in the general body meeting. They also asserted that they were committed not to take any anti-people decision and they would certainly implement the promises made by the party in its election manifesto during the civic polls that held earlier this year.
The party members agreed that the BJP was trying to mislead people by blaming Congress-led civic bodies for tax hike and decided to expose the state government by taking the issue to the people.
Nayak informed the party members that the government had imposed consolidated taxes at the rate of Rs 50 per month in February 5, 2010 through a notification owing to which a common man would have to incur Rs 600 per year. Similarly, the slum dweller had to pay Rs 25 as annual tax in the previous years, but the government had raised it to Rs 300 per year, she said. Nayak also clarified that the RMC had exempted the houses constructed up to 600 sq ft area from property tax according to its promise, but the BJP corporators were creating doubts in minds of people by providing fake figures.
Notably, irked by the government’s attitude, the mayors of Raipur, Bilaspur and Rajnandgaon had taken a joint press conference along with the PCC president, Leader of the Opposition in state Assembly Ravindra Choubey and other party leaders to clarify their stand at Congress Bhawan on April 29, 2010.
