Sant Kabirdas ward residents gherao RMC office, Nalghar

Raipur, May 05, 2010

About 125 people including 100 women from Sant Kabirdas ward gheraoed RMC office and Nalghar for about three hours on Wednesday seeking proper arrangement of water supply in their area. They also held their local corporator from BJP Narad Kaushal responsible for the water crisis in the ward and alleged that he had adopted biased attitude towards those bastis from where he got less vote during civic polls.
The ward residents start their demonstration at Nalghar at 11 am and crippled the road traffic in and around the locality for about 90 minutes. They also prevented empty tankers to fill water from the filling points at Nalghar. They maintained that they would continue their protest till their demands were fulfilled. However, they agreed for talks on insistence of Water Works department’s Executive Engineer KK Singh who promised that the municipal would send more tankers in the ward to solve water scarcity problem. But when the protesters demanded for new water pipeline in the ward, Singh failed to give any satisfactory answer to them.
The irked protesters then gheraoed municipal head office and handed a letter to the president of Water Works department Lekhraj Sonkar informing him that they were compelled to adopt the route of demonstration because of the RMC’s apathy towards their problem which they frequently pointed through letters. They further informed that Sukhram Nagar, Bamleshwari Nagar, Guru Ghasidas Nagar and Gogaon basti were facing acute water crisis, but neither the corporator Narad Kaushal nor the RMC administration had taken it seriously.
The ward residents also met Mayor Kiranmayi Nayak and informed her about water crisis in their area. Nayak assured that she would visit in the ward and ensure that the residents get sufficient water.
The general secretary of Sant Kabirdas ward’s Mohalla Vikas Samiti Mohit Dhritlahre informed that water crisis in the area became worse not due less number of tankers but because of local corporator Narad Kaushal’s double standards. “Presently, the RMC is plying five tankers in the ward and together they take fifty rounds a day which is sufficient for the entire population of the area. But Kaushal is more generous towards those who supported him during civic body elections. Being a corporator of the ward, he should put his rancours aside and think about everybody without being partial,” he said. Dhritlahre also informed that they had not asked Kaushal to come along with them during their protest at Nalghar and RMC office, but the latter joined them to gain political mileage.

RMC in dilemma over zone prez polls

Raipur, May 05, 2010

Mayor Kiranmayi Nayak has decided to seek Chief Minister Raman Singh’s interference on this issue and she is planning to meet him along with Congress and independent corporators in next couple of days.
Nayak was confident that the government would solve the issue quickly and the polls would be conducted on Wednesday (May 5) after she got assurance from Chief Secretary P Joy Oommen, but nothing happened according to her expectations.
Notably, the municipal Commissioner Om Prakash Choudhary had postponed the elections of zone presidents on April 28, 2010, just a day before the scheduled date by sending letters to Nayak and RMC Speaker. In his letter, Choudhary informed that the polls had been postponed on April 29, 2010 because the Urban Administration and Development Ministry was consulting from Ministry of Legal Affairs on its procedures. He said the next date for elections would only be decided after government’s permission. Irked by Choudhary’s letter, the Mayor met Chief Secretary P joy Oommen and demanded his removal pointing that he was misusing his powers.
According to rules, the zone presidents should be elected within 30 days of election of the Speaker. But, the Speaker was elected on January 12, 2010 and it was expected that zone presidents would be finalised on February 12, 2010. In this regard, the Speaker Sanjay Shrivastava wrote letters to the Mayor to quickly conduct polls but the latter got extension from the government as she was busy in the constitution of Mayor-in-Council (MiC) and budget preparations.

Liquor shop will not reopen after May 31: Shrivastava

Raipur, May 05, 2010

RMC Speaker Sanjay Shrivastava has assured the shopkeepers of Vijeta Complex (near Shastri Bazar) that the existing liquor shop in the edifice would not be reopened after May 31, 2010. Shrivastava’s assurance came when a delegation of the shopkeepers of the complex met him on Wednesday and requested him to prevent reopening of the shop for public convenience.
Notably, the liquor shop which had been sealed by the RMC on April 5, 2010 was reopened on April 29, 2010 as the liquor contractor Amolak Singh Bhatia, who was operating the shop, got stay order from the court in his favour. The period of stay order will end on May 31, 2010 after which the RMC administration is planning to seal the liquor shop again.
Shrivastava asked the RMC Commissioner Om Prakash Choudhary to use the provisions of Municipal Act to prevent reopening of the liquor shop in the complex again. According to the Act, no lease holder can operate business pertaining to intoxicants in the municipal shops, Shrivastava said.
A couple of days back, Mayor Kiranmayi Nayak had alleged that the controversial liquor shop restarted because of nexus between the shop owner and some certain municipal officials.
She had raised her doubts that the RMC incurred huge loss owing to corrupt officials and considering the seriousness of the matter, she also announced to conduct inquiry into the matter.
After the shop was sealed a month back, the liquor contractor Bhatia was trying to reopen it besides Meena Lodge near Evergreen Chowk.
But the shopkeepers around the Shastri Bazar launched protest against the liquor shop and bar in the first floor of the Vijeta Complex for the over a fortnight demanded from both the district administration and the government to remove them from the locality considering frequent movements of people, especially women and girls due to vegetable market and temples, mazars and mosques. The shopkeepers who were staging dharna against the liquor shop had even received threat calls from Bhatia.
