BJP planning to propose for property tax hike: Cong

Raipur, May 14, 2010

The District Congress Committee (DCC) says that after the Mayor-in-Council (MiC) revoked the hike in property tax on May 8, 2010, the opposition BJP in RMC was planning bring proposal to increase the tax again in the special general body meeting that would be held in next coming days. The DCC has advised all its corporators and the Mayor to oppose the BJP’s proposal.
The DCC president Inderchand Dhariwal said that property tax was actually increased by the RMC Commissioner Om Prakash Choudhary who had asked the municipal Secretariate officials to change the decision taken by the MiC after he was being pressurised by the BJP-led state government.
Dhariwal said the Congress would also raise the issue of consolidated tax that was increased by the government without informing the RMC. “It was really strange that the government on February 5, 2010 published in its gazette about hike in consolidated tax that was Rs 600 for all the property taxpayers and Rs 300 for slum dwellers every year. We have objected this hike and had also launched massive campaign against revocation of this tax in the capital. Now, the Congress will bring a proposal in the special general body meeting for annulment of this tax,” said Dhariwal.
Notably, both Congress and BJP want to take political mileage on tax issue. Congress alleges that the government was interfering in the RMC works and was steering the municipal administration. It further says that the government had hiked the consolidated tax deliberately to harass the mayor who belonged to Congress.
The BJP, too, has not let any stone unturned in trapping Congress on property tax issue and strongly condemned the ruling party for taking anti-people decision by hiking the tax. Later, when the MiC revoked the property tax, the BJP labeled it as its victory.
The issue of both consolidated and property taxes would certainly rock the general body meeting, admit the corporators from both the parties.
